Pre Season: Bayern win on Kane return

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 3 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane received a warm welcome back at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, where fans gave him a standing ovation as Bayern edged out Spurs 3-2 in a pre-season friendly.

Returning to his old stomping ground for the first time since leaving for Bayern in a £86.4 million deal last summer, Kane came on as a late substitute. The England captain was met with applause both when he entered the pitch and later, when he took a solo lap of honour after the match.

Alongside Eric Dier, who joined Bayern from Tottenham in January, the pair were honoured by Spurs before kick-off, receiving gifts in recognition of their contributions to the club.

Before the game, Tottenham also introduced their new signings (Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall) to the home crowd.

Once the match began, Dejan Kulusevski gave Spurs the lead, but Bayern responded with goals from Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Müller to take a 3-1 advantage. Kulusevski managed to pull one back for Spurs, but the Bundesliga side, now managed by Vincent Kompany, held on to secure the victory.

Best reaction from Spurs fans

Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, told us: "Throughout the 23/24 season, Spurs struggled with defending set pieces, and this issue reappeared today, possibly signaling trouble for us in the 24/25 season. Both first-half goals came from straightforward crosses to the back post, highlighting the defense's inability to stop opponents from scoring with headers. This must be a cause for concern for Ange Postecoglou."

Lauren, a Spurs fan from North London, gave some analysis. She said: "After struggling in the last match against Bayern, it wouldn’t have been surprising to see the manager make several changes, but he only made one by bringing in Yves Bissouma for Archie Gray. Bayern also made a similar change, with Dayot Upamecano replacing Sacha Boey to strengthen the defense and Jamal Musiala coming in for Gabriel Vidovic to boost the attack. This decision likely helped both teams perform better, and the quality of play was high from the start."
