EFL: Ipswich move closer to promotion

Coventry City 1 - 2 Ipswich Town

Ipswich regained their winning form when it mattered the most and claimed a victory at Coventry to move within one point of promotion back to the Premier League.

After earning only three points in four games, the Tractor Boys held their nerve and just about managed to get the better of the FA Cup semi-finalists. Kieffer Moore scored the first goal of the match in the first half, but Haji Wright's 19th goal of the season cancelled it out.

However, Cameron Burgess' scrambled goal in the 69th minute put Ipswich three points clear of third-placed Leeds United.

Ipswich closer to promotion - 1

If Ipswich manage to secure a draw at home against Huddersfield on Saturday, they will bring top-flight football back to Suffolk for the first time in 22 years.

A more detailed look at what happened

Ipswich went head just eight minutes into the match. Wes Burns opened up the Sky Blues defence down the right and pulled the ball back for Moore, who fired home a powerful low right-foot shot from 10 yards out.

Coventry remained committed and had chances to level the score. Ben Sheaf powered a 20-yard shot just high and wide, before Kasey Palmer and Wright were both denied at point-blank range. Ellis Simms also missed a chance, ballooning the ball badly over the goal.

Ipswich came close to adding a second goal just before the break when Burns opened Coventry up again, and keeper Brad Collins had to produce a great reaction save, diving low to his right to block Nathan Broadhead's downward header.

Coventry started the second half sluggishly, but then somehow found a way back into the game after a change of match official. Almost immediately after the referee had to be replaced, on 54 minutes, Haji Wright turned to fire in a low right-foot shot and stun the visiting away corner.

However, within five minutes, Ipswich were back in front when Burgess latched on to a deep Leif Davis free-kick.
