Manchester United's year ends with another defeat

Image
Manchester United 0 - 2 Newcastle United Newcastle United secured a rare league victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, only their second since 1972, as they handed the hosts a third consecutive home defeat – a feat not seen in 45 years. Author - Olivia T This result also marked another unwanted milestone for United, who have now suffered five league losses in a single calendar month for the first time since Sir Matt Busby’s reign in September 1962. Eddie Howe’s side were deserved winners, with early strikes from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealing the points and lifting Newcastle to fifth in the table to cap off a strong finish to 2024. The in-form Isak continued his hot streak, notching his 12th goal of the season and eighth in his last six matches, scoring in each of those games. In stark contrast, Manchester United were woeful. The last time they lost three consecutive home league games was in 1979, and this performance provided little cause for optimism. Head coach Ru...

Sliding Doors Moments: What if Shearer signed for Manchester United in 1996?

Image
The first sliding doors moment we are going to explore involves Manchester United and Alan Shearer. Author - Liam C In the summer of 1996, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made a huge effort to sign England striker Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers.  Shearer was the most prolific goal scorer in English football at the time, having just won the Premier League Golden Boot in both 1995 and 1996.  Ultimately, Shearer chose to join his boyhood club, Newcastle United, for a then-record fee of £15 million. However, an alternative scenario in which Shearer decided to sign for Manchester United could have dramatically affected both the club and the footballing landscape in the Premier League. The Old Trafford club decided to sign a certain unheard-of Norwegian at the time. He didn't do too badly... So, what if Shearer moved to Manchester United in 1996? In this alternate reality, Manchester United sign Shearer and he joins a team fresh off winning the Premier League and...

Author - Peter Grainger Trafford's best moments for Burnley? Some media outlets have reported that a deal will be a simple one for Newcastle to pull off if Scott Parker’s Burnley side fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League.  Trafford has been identified as the Magpies’ top target to replace their current goalkeeper. Premier League: Diallo and Mainoo shine for Man United

Image
Manchester United 3 - 2 Newcastle United  The Old Trafford side kept alive their chances of qualifying for European football through their league position with a hard fought win over Newcastle United. Kobbie Mainoo put Manchester United just after 31 minutes when he applied the finish from 10 yards after being played onside by Kieran Trippier. Anthony Gordon levelled for the away side four minutes after half side. At this point, Newcastle were on top again. Manchester United had needed a brilliant tackle from Sofyan Amrabat to stop Newcastle taking the lead as Alexander Isak failed to finish a three-on-one counter. Manchester United back in front Amad Diallo helped the home side regain the lead as he drove home just before the hour mark as Newcastle failed to clear a corner to put Manchester United back in front. A few moments later, Eddie Howe’s visitors were inches away from an equaliser as Miguel Almiron just failed to turn home a low cross from the excellent Gordon at the f...

PL: Newcastle regret missed chances against Manchester United

Image
Newcastle United 1 - 1 Manchester United Edinson Cavani came off the bench to score an equaliser for Manchester United and ruin Newcastle's hopes of a priceless second league win of the season. The striker was introduced after a  poor first half from the visitors, during which they conspired to partly gift Allan Saint-Maximin the opening goal. Cavani immediately added a threat to the blunt attack. He side-footed one effort wide before finding the net at the third time of asking with a poked shot from inside the box. It was cruel on Newcastle. They defended with determination and counter-attacked with intensity to produce their finest display of the season at a loud and passionate St James' Park. However, the Geordie faithful would have to ask a rather key question. Why can't they put in that level of performance every week? For Manchester United, it was another poor performance in a season of poor performances. Where do they go from here? Let's have a look at some o...

The most dramatic races to the Premier League title

Image
We all love a dramatic end to the season Let's explore some of the best and most iconic title races in the history of English football. Will the 2024 race for the title match any of those listed below? Leicester City, Tottenham and Arsenal in 2016 An odd one to choose perhaps, but this was a fascinating title race. It was a two-horse race for a period, but Spurs finished third. Leicester won the title that season thanks to the form of former Non-League player Jamie Vardy. Many described it as the greatest-ever sporting achievement.  Following this title win, Leicester players struggled to match what they achieved during that season. They were even relegated in 2023. They quickly recovered to win the Championship in 2024, once again being inspired by Vardy. EFL Cup: Manchester United win at Wembley

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United Newcastle United's long wait for a trophy goes on as they lost the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. Casemiro’s header opened the scoring midway through the first half. Marcus Rashford then doubled Man United's lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle's Sven Botman. Eddie Howe knew he had to go for it at the start of the second half.  He introduced Alexander Isak up front alongside Callum Wilson. However, it ultimately had very little impact. The reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics.  Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager and there could be more success and trophies coming up for his side. Newcastle United end long wait for a trophy

Image
Liverpool 1 - 2 Newcastle United Newcastle United ended a seven-decade wait for a domestic trophy with a fully deserved Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley. Author - William G Stadium - Wembley Stadium Eddie Howe’s side delivered a performance of discipline and intensity, sparking wild celebrations among the Toon Army as goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak either side of half-time secured their historic win. Burn, fresh from his first England call-up, powered home a header from Kieran Trippier’s corner in first-half stoppage time, before Isak capitalised on Jacob Murphy’s knockdown to fire in a clinical finish seven minutes after the break. Liverpool, still reeling from their midweek Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, pulled one back through substitute Federico Chiesa in added time, setting up a tense finale. But Newcastle held firm, surviving a nervy finish to lift their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup and their first major ho...

UCL: Newcastle earn a point at the San Siro

Image
AC Milan 0 - 0 Newcastle United With a 0-0 draw at the San Siro, Newcastle earned what could prove to be a vital point after holding a dominant AC Milan to their first Champions League match in over twenty years. Eddie Howe's side qualified for the group stages for the first time since the 2002/03 season, joining Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Milan, last year's semifinalists. In such a daunting draw, any points gained away from St James' Park should be cherished - even if theis was mainly earned through gritty defending and opposition wastefulness. Newcastle were fortunate to go into half-time level with the hosts after Rafael Leao fluffed a backheel after a fine solo run. In the second half, the game became much more even. The visitors' Sandro Tonali had a shot blocked, while Tijjani Reijnders forced Pope into a decent save. More AC Milan news In the closing stages, Leao should have won it with a header after getting between Newcastle def...

Image
Newcastle United 0 - 2 West Ham United Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were on target as West Ham claimed an impressive victory over Newcastle, easing the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui. The Spanish coach, who succeeded David Moyes in the summer, had struggled to find consistency, with the Hammers managing just three wins in their opening 11 games. Author - William G from GMCR Football This eye-catching result, however, will boost belief among the club's fans that Lopetegui can steer the team in the right direction. Despite dominating for large stretches, Newcastle fell behind when Soucek headed in from a corner during the first half. Anthony Gordon had a golden chance to level the score after Jean-Clair Todibo's poor clearance gifted him a shot, but his effort was straight at Lukasz Fabianski. Injuries and mistakes cost Manchester United again

Image
Newcastle United 4 - 1 Manchester United  It was another dreadful Sunday afternoon for Ruben Amorim's side as mistakes and another injury cost them against Newcastle. Author - Olivia T Stadium - St James' Park The Manchester United boss dropped first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana after his two mistakes against Lyon in Thursday's 2-2 Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw. His replacement Altay Bayındır was guilty of a serious error to seal an easy home win. The Turkey international clipped a ball straight to Joelinton who headed into the path of Bruno Guimaraes to make it 4-1 in the 77th minute. The game was, ultimately, probably over before that Bayindir mistake as Newcastle looked comfortable once Harvey Barnes had made it 3-1.  The visitors also lost Joshua Zirkzee to a suspected hamstring injury, dropped below Everton on goal difference to 14th in the table. They are now three points off fourth-bottom West Ham United. This was their 10th defeat in 21 Premier Le...

Image

Let's explore what happened West Ham United 1 - 2 Aston Villa Substitute Jhon Duran clinched a late victory for Aston Villa as they kicked off their Premier League season with a win at West Ham. Duran seized onto Jacob Ramsey's pass and coolly tucked the ball into the bottom corner with just 11 minutes left, shortly after rumours circulated that the Hammers had made two unsuccessful bids for the striker. Amadou Onana marked his Villa debut in style, heading home Youri Tielemans' corner after just four minutes when the Belgian midfielder was left unmarked in the box. West Ham levelled the score before half-time when Matty Cash was deemed to have fouled Tomas Soucek during a tussle in the box. Lucas Paqueta converted the penalty, sending Emiliano Martinez the wrong way with a stuttered run-up as he slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. However, Duran ultimately had the final word, ensuring Villa's ...

Throwback to a Christmas cracker from 1995

Image
December 1995: Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United We're going to throwback to a Christmas cracker from 1995 when Manchester United were 10 points behind top-of-the-table Newcastle. Author - Olivia T What happened in the match? The atmosphere inside Old Trafford was electric, with both sets of fans aware of the stakes. After a poor run of form, the home side desperately needed a win, and the players had to deliver. An early goal from Andy Cole certainly settled some nerves for everyone associated with Manchester United.  At times, Keegan's team came agonisingly close to equalising as Peter Schmeichel pulled off a series of crucial saves to keep the home side in front. For all Newcastle's attacking prowess, their players struggled to find a way past United’s resilient defence. The second half saw United assert greater control. Their midfield, marshalled by Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, began to dominate the battle in the centre of the park. Victory was ultimately se...
