Reaction from those involved

Goalscorer Joe Ironside told BBC Sport: "I can't describe it, I am a bit lost for words, it panned out how I dreamt it last night. I have got to play here, and it is stuff I dreamed of. Alan Shearer was my hero and I grew up idolising him. Now I have scored the winner at St James' Park."

Cambridge Director Godric Smith tweeted: So proud of all the players, staff and fans at Cambridge United. A day to cherish. And thank you Newcastle United. Warm, generous and gracious. Good luck for the rest of the season."

Cambridge head coach Mark Bonner was delighted with his side's progress and progression in the competition: "In terms of memories for players and supporters, you can't get much bigger than that."

As you can imagine, the reaction from Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side was very different. The Newcastle Twitter posted the thoughts of Matt Ritchie.

Fan comments

One member of the Geordie faithful tweeted: "Embarrassing advertisement for the players we want to sign, we're playing like a relegation team. It's a disgrace."

Another fan added; "We have won one game all season, yes one game. We are shocking. Eddie Howe had a full premier League team against a very average division two team and Eddie couldn't beat them. Let that sink in!"

On a more positive note, this is how Cambridge fans responded after the match.
