Premier League: Diallo and Mainoo shine for Man United

Manchester United 3 - 2 Newcastle United

The Old Trafford side kept alive their chances of qualifying for European football through their league position with a hard fought win over Newcastle United.

Manchester United v Newcastle

Kobbie Mainoo put Manchester United just after 31 minutes when he applied the finish from 10 yards after being played onside by Kieran Trippier.

Anthony Gordon levelled for the away side four minutes after half side. At this point, Newcastle were on top again. Manchester United had needed a brilliant tackle from Sofyan Amrabat to stop Newcastle taking the lead as Alexander Isak failed to finish a three-on-one counter.

Manchester United back in front

Amad Diallo helped the home side regain the lead as he drove home just before the hour mark as Newcastle failed to clear a corner to put Manchester United back in front. A few moments later, Eddie Howe’s visitors were inches away from an equaliser as Miguel Almiron just failed to turn home a low cross from the excellent Gordon at the far post.

It was left to Rasmus Hojlund to settle some home nerves, stepping to his right before sending a low finish into the bottom corner for his 15th goal of the season. Some of those nerves returned a towards the end of the match as Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall fired home from the edge of the box in the second minute of stoppage time but the home side held on.

Newcastle United will need a final-day win at Brentford to be certain of a top-seven finish. Even in Manchester United don't finish in the top 7, they will stop quality for Europe if they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
