EFL Cup: Manchester United win at Wembley

Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United

Newcastle United's long wait for a trophy goes on as they lost the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.

Man United 2 - 0 Newcastle

Casemiro’s header opened the scoring midway through the first half. Marcus Rashford then doubled Man United's lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle's Sven Botman.

Eddie Howe knew he had to go for it at the start of the second half.  He introduced Alexander Isak up front alongside Callum Wilson. However, it ultimately had very little impact. The reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics.

Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager and there could be more success and trophies coming up for his side.

Player and manager reaction

Marcus Rashford told the media: "It’s a mixture of emotions. It’s massive for us to be involved in these games, it’s something that we’ve missed as a club, and hopefully, this win pushes us to keep going. We want more moments like this. The manager wants us to play attacking football and [be able to switch positions]. It’s something that we’ve worked on but I also think it’s natural for a lot of our attacking players."

Eddie Howe also spoke with the media. He added: “We're desperate to get back here and win a trophy. It's disappointing, and it hurts badly to see the supporters who have been amazing for us this season."

 What are the fans saying?

Eleazar said: "I am really pleased with Weghorst and his smile. Even though he didn’t score, his performance was astonishing and gave his all on the field. I really was in tears when our giant was sitting in front of all the fans and enjoying the moment. Let’s keep more trophies in our cabinet guys."

Rodrigo is another United fan. He added: "It's incredible to see how the mentality of this team changed with Ten Hag and how the control of the matches changed with Casemiro. United is returning to be competitive for every title on the way. Happy to see one of the biggest clubs in the world winning a trophy again."

One YouTuber commented on the official highlights of the match. This Manchester United was very happy: "I haven’t been this happy and excited to watch my team for years. Erik Ten Hag made me believe fully in all he did with our great club Manchester United."

This video shows fans and players singing after the match.

Gareth, a Newcastle fan, told us: "It was a fantastic weekend, but the performance on the day wasn't the best."

Amy was very disappointed by the performance. She said: "I just thought we were really poor in the final third. I was genuinely expecting us to show a lot more. We started the game ok but it wasn't great after that."

Another Geordie told us: "One shot on target is not good enough, our shots on target last few games have been shocking really."
