Newcastle United confirm departure of Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe has stepped down as head coach of Newcastle United.

The 48-year-old has left the club after almost five years in charge, following a disappointing 2025/2026 campaign.

Howe guided Newcastle to Champions League qualification on two occasions and ended the club’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the Carabao Cup in 2024/25.

Newcastle said the process of appointing a new head coach is already at an advanced stage, with German coach Matthias Jaissle understood to be the leading candidate for the role.

Howe's coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone will also leave St James' Park, along with head of performance Dan Hodges.

A statement from Eddie Howe

"After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.

"Although it's been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it's the right one. It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United."

A closer look at a memorable era for Newcastle United fans

Howe took charge in November 2021 and guided the Magpies to an 11th-place finish in his first season.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League in 2022-23 and repeated the feat in 2024-25, while also lifting the League Cup.

Last season, they reached the Champions League knockout stages for the first time, before losing to Barcelona in the last 16. However, they lost 17 of their 38 Premier League matches and ultimately missed out on European football for the following campaign.
