Matheus Cunha inspires Wolves to comfortable victory over Leicester

Image
Wolves 3 - 0 Leicester City Wolves extended their fine run of form as Matheus Cunha led them to a sixth consecutive Premier League win with a 3-0 triumph over Leicester City. Author - Peter Grainger Stadium - Molineux The Brazilian striker scored one goal and set up efforts for Jorgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes, helping Wolves to achieve six top-flight victories in a row for the first time since 1970. Meanwhile, Leicester’s struggles continued, with Jamie Vardy missing a second-half penalty and remaining on 198 goals for the club with just four matches left before his departure. Cunha, who has a £62.5 million release clause and is widely expected to leave Molineux this summer amid interest from Manchester United, notched his 15th Premier League goal of the campaign. Wolves, who secured their Premier League status earlier this month, will now face the difficult task of finding a replacement for their influential forward. Wolves sack O'Neil after Ipswich defeat

Image
Wolves 1 - 2 Ipswich Town Jack Taylor's last-gasp header earned Ipswich a priceless win at Molineux, a match that resulted in the sacking of Wolves manager Gary O'Neil. Author - Liam C 🚨🟠 BREAKING: Wolves have sacked head coach Gary O’Neil following defeat vs Ipswich Town. #WWFC pic.twitter.com/dghhjHTMqw — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) December 15, 2024 Taylor's winner in the 93rd minute secured the Tractor Boys' second victory of the season, and tensions flared on the pitch between the two teams at full-time. The now former Wolves boss watched on helplessly as the second-to-last place Wolves conceded a disastrous opening goal due to Matt Doherty's unfortunate own goal. Additionally, Taylor's late winner from a corner has left Wolves three points behind Ipswich and four points away from safety.  Why are Wolves making a managerial change? This was their 11th Premier League defeat of the season – with only two wins to their name – leaving the Black Co...

Premier League: Everton secure dramatic draw against Wolves

Image
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 - 1 Everton Everton struck nine minutes into injury time to slightly boost their survival hopes and deny Wolves a fifth straight home success in the Premier League. A very important goal for Everton. https://t.co/IlqFoRT8ul pic.twitter.com/DRTEvyAM6o — SuperFootball (@ESFootballNews) May 21, 2023 It looked like Hee Chan Hwang had scored the winner for Wolves when he turned home the rebound after a lung-bursting run and powerful effort from Adama Traore, and his side could have put the game beyond doubt with chances either side of the break at Molineux.   Instead, relegation-threatened Everton earned their point at the death when James Tarkowski beat Dan Bentley in the air and Yerry Mina turned in from close range. The Everton boss Sean Dyche told the media: "Formation and tactics doesn't always win games, mentality wins games and gets us a point today with a firm mentality and people not making excuses. They kept knocking on the door as har...

Brighton maintain European push

Image
Wolves 0 - 2 Brighton & Hove Albion Brighton kept their European ambitions alive with a 2-0 victory over Wolves, thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck and Brajan Gruda. Author - Peter Grainger Stadium - Molineux Welbeck opened the scoring from the penalty spot shortly before the interval, while Gruda, a second-half substitute, sealed the win with his first goal for the club in the closing stages. Wolves came closest through Matheus Cunha, whose acrobatic effort drew an excellent save from Bart Verbruggen. Despite a lively spell after the break, particularly following a triple change by head coach VĂtor Pereira, the home side were unable to convert their chances. The result lifts Brighton to ninth in the Premier League, level on points with Brentford who sit just above them. With two matches remaining, the Seagulls remain in contention for a second successive European campaign, although much still hinges on other results. Wolves move further away from relegation zone

Image
Wolves 1 - 0 West Ham United Jørgen Strand Larsen continued his fine form with his third goal in two games as Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a crucial victory over West Ham United, easing their relegation concerns. Author - Jamie P Stadium - Molineux Stadium The Norwegian forward, who missed the international break with a fractured hand, made an instant impact on his return, notching his 10th Premier League goal of the season. With Wolves still without the suspended Matheus Cunha, it was Strand Larsen who stepped up, steering home in the 21st minute after an intricate run from JoĂŁo Gomes—his effort helped on its way by a slight deflection off former Wolves defender Max Kilman. The hosts almost doubled their advantage five minutes later following another driving run from Gomes, but Marshall Munetsi’s effort rattled the crossbar after a smart link-up with Strand Larsen. West Ham, sluggish in the first half, should have drawn level early on when Evan Ferguson—handed his first sta...

Nations League: England relegated

Image
Italy 1 - 0 England It was another awful night for England as they were relegated from their Nations League. There are now a lot of questions to answer for Gareth Southgate.  He has of course been here before – in his nightmares at Molineux. Back in June, at the end of the 4-0 humiliation against Hungary, the England manager had ventured onto the pitch to applaud the home crowd. The boos that greeted him dripped with venom. And so to full time here. After Hungary at home; goodness, after the loss to Hungary away – plus the draws in between against Germany and Italy which had got this Nations League campaign off to such a bad start – it was a night when Southgate desperately needed a mood-changer, something to restore belief. Yet there would only be more frustration, more dead-ends and an absence of creative inspiration. Watch the highlights from England's dismal night. Premier League: Title challengers start campaign with a win

Image
Arsenal 2 - 0 Wolves Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a straightforward win against Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz opened the scoring for the Gunners in the first half, heading in from Bukayo Saka’s cross from the right. After the break, Saka added a second with a powerful left-footed strike into the right corner, capitalising on a quickly taken free-kick that caught the visitors off guard. A closer look at the match Although Arsenal weren't at their best, they were always in control and fully deserved the victory against determined opposition. Wolves debutant Jorgen Strand Larsen had a good chance in the first half, but his header was well saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Substitute Matheus Cunha had an opportunity to equalise, but Raya comfortably dealt with his weak effort as Wolves pressed for a goal. Despite their efforts, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil will have few complaints about the result, as his team struggled to create clear chances ...

Arsenal recover after controversial red card

Image
Wolves 0 - 1 Arsenal Riccardo Calafiori’s strike secured a crucial Premier League win for 10-man Arsenal against Wolves, despite the drama surrounding Myles Lewis-Skelly's controversial red card. Author - DJ Stadium - Molineux Stadium Referee Michael Oliver stunned the Gunners in the first half by sending off 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly for a foul on Matt Doherty. The incident occurred 30 yards from Wolves’ goal as Doherty looked to break from an Arsenal corner. At just 18 years and 121 days old, Lewis-Skelly became the third-youngest player to be shown a red card in Premier League history, behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. Wolves midfielder JoĂŁo Gomes also saw red in the second half for a second bookable offence after fouling Jurrien Timber. However, his dismissal will likely be little more than a footnote in the story of the match. Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off could have dealt a significant blow to Arsenal's title hopes. A slip-up here would have allowed Liverpool to exten...

Author - Sean M The match ended in controversy when John Stones scored a dramatic header in the 95th minute from Phil Foden’s corner. Initially, the goal was disallowed for offside, but after a VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh reversed the decision, allowing the goal to stand, much to Wolves' frustration. Earlier in the match, Josko Gvardiol equalised for the hosts after Jorgen Strand Larsen had given Wolves the lead. Unfortunately for Wolves, they remain winless this season and currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table. What happened then? In the final seconds of stoppage time, Foden delivered a corner kick that Stones headed powerfully into the net.  However, as the Manchester City players celebrated, the linesman raised his flag to signal an offside, noting that Bernardo Silva was standing in fro...
