Wolves sack O'Neil after Ipswich defeat

Wolves 1 - 2 Ipswich Town

Jack Taylor's last-gasp header earned Ipswich a priceless win at Molineux, a match that resulted in the sacking of Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.

Taylor's winner in the 93rd minute secured the Tractor Boys' second victory of the season, and tensions flared on the pitch between the two teams at full-time.

The now former Wolves boss watched on helplessly as the second-to-last place Wolves conceded a disastrous opening goal due to Matt Doherty's unfortunate own goal. Additionally, Taylor's late winner from a corner has left Wolves three points behind Ipswich and four points away from safety.

Why are Wolves making a managerial change?

This was their 11th Premier League defeat of the season – with only two wins to their name – leaving the Black Country side in 19th place, four points adrift of safety.

Gary O'Neil took charge just four days before the 2023-24 campaign kicked off, following the departure of Julen Lopetegui, and guided Wolves to a 14th-place finish last season.

However, they started this season in dismal form, losing seven and drawing one of their first eight league games.

A promising four-game unbeaten streak, including back-to-back victories over Southampton and Fulham, hinted that they might have turned a corner.

But those hopes were dashed by a defeat to Bournemouth, followed by a heavy loss to Everton, and subsequent defeats against West Ham and Ipswich.

Defensive frailties have been a recurring issue, with Wolves conceding a league-high 40 goals and shipping two or more goals in 13 of their 16 matches so far.

Ipswich took advantage of Wolves nerves

Kieran McKenna and his squad celebrated jubilantly with the travelling Ipswich supporters after what could be their most significant result of the season.

The Tractor Boys, well aware of their place in the Premier League hierarchy, have kept their feet firmly on the ground following back-to-back promotions from League One.

Arriving with a calm and composed mindset, they recognised the mounting pressure on Wolves and leave with renewed confidence after a vital victory in the fight to stay up.

Ipswich's defensive resilience shone, particularly in the final 15 minutes when Wolves were piling on the pressure and looked the more likely side to score.

However, Ipswich punished the hosts' struggles with set-piece defending and turned their anxiety into a crucial three points.

Next up for Ipswich is Newcastle's visit to Portman Road on Saturday, followed by tough trips to Arsenal and a home clash with Chelsea to close out the year.
