EFL Cup: United impress against Palace

Image
Manchester United 3 - 0 Crystal Palace Holders United moved into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro before Martial's clinical first-time effort 10 minutes after the restart. After a few weeks of chaos, this was the kind of night United manager Erik ten Hag must have wanted as his side clinched their most significant win of the season. With Mason Mount back in the starting XI and fellow summer signing Sofyan Amrabat making his first start, Ten Hag was at least able to integrate some key pieces of his United puzzle. There were also plenty of examples of controlled possession, which Ten Hag has so far struggled to implement. Evidently, the game plan was to create an overload on the United right with lofted cross-field passes from the left, which both Amrabat and Mount were able to execute. Morocco international Amrabat caught the eye as an inverted left-back. The on-loan Fiorentina man's early shot was poor, but he was excellent

Pre Season: Young United side lose opening friendly

Image
Rosenborg 1 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United got the 2024/25 pre-season campaign underway as they were beaten 1-0 by Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway. Erik ten Hag opted to select a different outfield line-up for each half at the Lerkendal Stadium, with 21 players in total getting valuable minutes in their legs after the summer. Radek Vitek was the star performer for The Red Devils as he made a multitude of spectacular saves to prevent the home side from scoring before Noah Holm struck with almost the last kick of the game. Ethan Wheatley and Ethan Ennis had the best opportunities for United, while the likes of Casemiro, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford were afforded time on the pitch seven weeks on from the FA Cup final. Some immediate reaction as United returned to action Olivia Taylor, a Manchester United fan from Chorlton, said: It was beneficial for some first team players to gain valuable playing time. I'm confident they'll be fully prepared for the August Communit

The Big Discussion: How can Manchester United improve?

Image
Another defeat for Manchester United where they had plenty of opportunities to win but couldn't get over the line. Their players must improve their game management in the season ahead. The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday in our first away match of the Premier League campaign after Seagulls striker Joao Pedro headed a 95th-minute winner. It was the sixth time since the 2022/23 season that Ten Hag's side have lost a league game from a goal scored in second-half stoppage time. They will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment on the south coast when Arne Slot’s Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday 1 September, What are they currently doing well at and how can they build on it? One of the most noticeable improvements in this team during the first two weeks of the Premier League season is their pressing game, both in its organisation and the intensity with which they apply it. Having Fernandes play as a false nine has been a key fa

PL: Chelsea 1 - 1 Everton

Image
Chelsea missed a chance to close the gap on leaders Manchester City as a depleted Everton side earned a fantastic point. Mason Mount gave Chelsea a deserved lead after 70 minutes. The England midfielder placed a calm finish past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford following Reece James' pass. A very interesting evening at Stamford Bridge Everton shocked the European champions by equalising four minutes later. The 19-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite converted at the back post after Anthony Gordon's free-kick. Chelsea carried on having the chances to win it but the winning goal never came. Thiago Silva had a great opportunity but saw his powerful header superbly saved by Pickford. It was an impressive performance from the England international as he also kept out attempts from Christian Pulisic, James, Jorginho and Mount when the score was 0-0. He has come in for some criticism this season from Everton fans and beyond. Any questions about his ability were answered tonight

UCL: Chelsea cruise to win over AC Milan

Image
Chelsea 3 - 0 AC Milan This was an even more comfortable win for the Blues than the scoreline suggests. Graham Potter made two changes to his side, with Jorginho and Kai Havertz missing out due to slight injury problems, but both were okay for a place on the bench. Edouard Mendy returned among the substitutes, as Kepa Arrizabalaga continued in goal. Kalidou Koulibaly came into the defence to join Wesley Fofana and Thiago Silva in a back three. After a couple of close calls, it was midway through the first half that the breakthrough arrived. Thiago Silva quickly forced a save and a block when getting his head to a series of set-pieces, but on the third occasion Milan couldn't clear and Fofana was in the right place to put the ball in the net after a scramble around the penalty spot. Mason Mount thought he had made it two soon afterwards with a lovely chip over the keeper, but it was disallowed for offside. The home side pulled away to safety in the second half, though, as Pierr

Pre Season: Arsenal win in LA

Image
Arsenal 2 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United were defeated in their opening game of the US tour against Premier League rivals in Los Angeles. Højlund gave his team an early lead in the 10th minute, latching onto Marcus Rashford’s first-time pass, overpowering young defender Ayden Heaven, and slipping the ball through keeper Karl Hein’s legs. The Danish forward missed a close-range opportunity from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross before appearing to suffer a muscle injury just 15 minutes in, forcing him to leave the field. Yoro's departure was similarly unfortunate. The 18-year-old defender, who had only joined United from Lille 10 days ago, went down and required extensive treatment before also having to withdraw. Manager Erik ten Hag was understandably frustrated by these injuries. Despite their strong start, the match didn’t end to the Dutchman’s satisfaction either. Gabriel Jesus equalised with a close-range effort after 25 minutes, which Ten Hag believed should have been r

Image
Two Spanish sides progressed in the Champions League after an epic night full of drama Real Madrid 2 - 3 Chelsea (Agg 5-4) Chelsea's reign as champions of Europe came to an end despite beating Real Madrid on a night of high drama and tension at the Bernabeu Stadium. Mason Mount's finish and Antonio Rudiger's header had wiped out Real's 3-1 first-leg advantage. This brought the quarter-final tie level in Spain's capital. Thomas Tuchel's side were outstanding throughout and Timo Werner's clever finish from an angle put them ahead for the first time on aggregate. They were within sight of a place in the semi-finals. However, substitute Rodrygo - after a stunning pass by Luka Modric - forced extra time with a volleyed finish before Karim Benzema headed the decisive goal in the 96th minute to send Real through 5-4 on aggregate. This was the reaction of the Chelsea manager Bayern Munich 1 - 1 Villarreal Villarreal silenced a passionate Bayern Munich crowd to rea

FA Cup: Liverpool win second trophy of the season

Image
Chelsea 0 - 0 Liverpool (Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties) Liverpool won their second trophy of the season and they keep their quadruple dream alive After a tense 120 minutes, Liverpool triumphed on penalties. They have won the FA Cup for the first time since 2006.  Before the drama of the penalties, it was a close fairly close game for the majority, even if Liverpool did have more shots. Chelsea did have their moments.  Both sides struggled to find that finishing touch and it finished 0-0. In the end, it was won on penalties.  Liverpool quickly gained the advantage in the shootout after César Azpilicueta hit the post with the second Blues spot-kick. Sadio Mané then wasted the chance to win it earlier with a weak fifth kick. Mason Mount then missed Chelsea’s seventh kick, allowing Tsimikas to slide in the winner. Premier League: United fight back to beat Forest

Image
Manchester United 3 - 2 Nottingham Forest Manchester United managed a remarkable comeback after being two goals behind to secure an exciting victory against 10-man Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Premier League news and stories: 2023/2024 In a first for Premier League history, United found themselves trailing by two goals within the initial four minutes of the game due to a terrible start. Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly scored for Nottingham Forest during this challenging period. Christian Eriksen narrowed the gap by successfully tapping in Marcus Rashford's well-placed low cross. Casemiro then missed a clear opportunity to score when he headed wide of an open net before halftime.  However, he later made amends by equalizing for United. He managed to bundle the ball into the net from Bruno Fernandes' headed pass across the goal, following an impressive assist from Rashford. Before the match, United's manager Ten Hag emphasized Fernandes' exceptional leadership qua

Premier League: United start season with a win

Image
Manchester United 1 - 0 Fulham Joshua Zirkzee quickly became an Old Trafford favourite by scoring an 87th-minute winner against Fulham. The former Bologna striker was brought on alongside Alejandro Garnacho after an hour, as United struggled to break down Marco Silva's side. With time running out, the duo combined brilliantly, with the Argentine winger delivering a cross from the right that Zirkzee expertly guided into the bottom corner, dealing a crushing blow to Fulham.United had a slow start, with Andre Onana forced to tip a Kenny Tete effort over the bar early on. But as the match progressed, United posed the greater threat. Fulham's goalkeeper Bernd Leno was in fine form, making three crucial saves to deny United. First, he thwarted Bruno Fernandes , drawing visible frustration from the Portuguese midfielder.  Then, it was Mason Mount's turn. His attempt was also stopped by Leno after a cross from Marcus Rashford. Despite these setbacks, United were determined to

UEFA Nations League: Hungary edge out England

Image
Hungary 1 - 0 England In this Nations League match, England produced one of their worst performances of recent time.  Southgate’s team were strangely passive, lacking bite in the areas that mattered, especially the final third, and they came to threaten too late, playing with the bit between their teeth only after they fell behind to Dominik Szoboszlai’s 66th minute penalty. The award was soft, but it was correct and punishment for a moment of clumsiness from Reece James, who had only just entered as a substitute. 🇭🇺 Hungary beat England for the first time since 1962! 👏👏👏 #NationsLeague pic.twitter.com/62Y3bS88X8 — UEFA Nations League (@EURO2024) June 4, 2022 James touched a cross back towards his goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, and worried that he had not put enough on it. And so he stepped across Zsolt Nagy to make sure that the Hungary wing-back could not give chase. Nagy went down theatrically and England had a sinking feeling. Szoboszlai once told Neymar before he took a p
