FA Cup: Liverpool win second trophy of the season

Chelsea 0 - 0 Liverpool (Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties)

Liverpool won their second trophy of the season and they keep their quadruple dream alive

Liverpool v Chelsea FA Cup final

After a tense 120 minutes, Liverpool triumphed on penalties. They have won the FA Cup for the first time since 2006.

Before the drama of the penalties, it was a close fairly close game for the majority, even if Liverpool did have more shots. Chelsea did have their moments.

Both sides struggled to find that finishing touch and it finished 0-0. In the end, it was won on penalties.

Liverpool quickly gained the advantage in the shootout after César Azpilicueta hit the post with the second Blues spot-kick. Sadio Mané then wasted the chance to win it earlier with a weak fifth kick. Mason Mount then missed Chelsea’s seventh kick, allowing Tsimikas to slide in the winner.

More reaction

Liverpool tweeted: "WE ARE THE #EmiratesFACup WINNERS!"

Chelsea's reaction tweet contained a lot less emotion: "Tsimikas scores and Liverpool win the cup." One fan responded: "We lost 4 FA Cup finals in 5 years now. Unbelievable."

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson told the BBC: "We're here to lift trophies, we work so hard all season. To come here and get over the line means a lot to everyone. The fans deserve it, the whole club. It's a big moment for us, we haven't been in this final for some time so to win it was special.

"It was difficult, we knew it would be. We've had so many games in a short space of time. It was a big blow with Mo going off and Fab last week. But that's what we're all about, the attitude and mentality to keep going and to dig in when it's tough. So to win it on penalties is incredible. All credit to the boys."

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel told the media: "Like in the last final, the Carabao Cup, no regrets. I told the team I was proud. We played 240 minutes of final team against maybe the most dangerous attacking team in the world and it's 0-0.

"We lose on penalties and we are disappointed and sad, but at the same time proud because we showed everything that we need. I was sure during the match the momentum was on our side but unfortunately I was not right."

On the BBC website, one person commented: "Liverpool will be relieved to win on penalties, they were the better team overall. Domestic Cup double complete, still on for the Treble of Cups. And while it's a long shot, the quadruple is still on too."

On The Guardian, one neutral fan joked: "A fantastic game for fans who like shots off target."
