Noussair Mazraoui: Got forward regularly, with an early shot blocked before another effort found the side netting. Was fortunate to escape punishment when he failed to spot Joy-Lance Mickels dropping towards the far post, where the Sabah player was left with a clear header in the first half. 6
Leny Yoro: A big season awaits the young Frenchman, who needs to find the consistency that has so far been missing during his United career. Had limited opportunity to shine but made no real errors. 7
Lisandro Martinez: Led United's defence and helped guide Yoro through the game. Marked his return to the scoresheet by pouncing on a loose ball after the Sabah defence hesitated. 7
Patrick Dorgu (off 71, Amass): Was he fortunate to escape an early handball inside the penalty area? This was Michael Carrick's first start for him at left-back and about as accommodating an opposition as he could have hoped for. His low cross was turned in by Matheus Cunha. 7
Kobbie Mainoo (off 63, Santos): Released Bruno Fernandes with a magnificent lofted pass that his captain could not quite make the most of. Continued to pick out team-mates with precise passing, although United did not always capitalise. 8
Youri Tielemans (off 46, Mount): Combined effectively with Mainoo and produced a brilliant reverse pass to send Bruno Fernandes through for United's second goal. 7
Bryan Mbeumo (off 71, Lacey): A quietly effective display from the Cameroon forward, who attacked down the right with purpose. Cut inside to fire a first-half shot straight at the Sabah goalkeeper and threaded a fine pass through to Benjamin Sesko for his goal. 8
Bruno Fernandes: The Ballon d'Or nominee is still not quite at the level he reached last season, but produced a composed finish from Tielemans' pass. 7
Matheus Cunha: Moved back to his favoured left side, where he looks considerably more effective. It brought him a goal and almost a second, although his overall display fell slightly below expectations. Does he keep his place ahead of Marcus Rashford on Sunday? 6
Benjamin Sesko (off 63, Zirkzee): Came close with a first-half back-heel before showing the composure to round the goalkeeper and score for the second game running. His physical presence gives United's attack a useful focal point. 8
