Relief for Amorim, pressure mounting on Potter

Image
Let's have a look at a fascinating Saturday of Premier League action Goals, red cards and more Author | Josh D Narrow win for Liverpool on derby day Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the season with a fifth consecutive victory, defeating Everton in the Merseyside derby. Arne Slot’s team asserted themselves early as Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring with a deft lob from Mohamed Salah’s pass inside 10 minutes. The Dutch midfielder then turned creator shortly before the half-hour, threading a pass through for Hugo Ekitike to finish low beyond Jordan Pickford. Everton gradually found their footing and were rewarded just before the hour. Jack Grealish’s cross was met by Iliman Ndiaye, who laid the ball back for Idrissa Gueye to lash home a rising strike that left Alisson with no chance. Crystal Palace deepened the pressure on Graham Potter with a victory at West Ham. Jean-Philippe Mateta struck first in the 37th minute, reacting quickest to nod home after Alphonse Areola ha...

A familiar face ruins Chelsea's Champions League return

Bayern Munich 3 - 1 Chelsea Harry Kane took full advantage of Chelsea’s defensive frailties to score twice for Bayern Munich. Author | Lewis W Stadium | Allianz Arena The England captain, now 32, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by MoisĂ©s Caicedo and later sealed the win with a curling finish after Malo Gusto ’s misplaced pass. Chelsea had already gifted Bayern a lead when Trevoh Chalobah diverted the ball into his own net. A returning Cole Palmer offered brief hope with a superb strike into the top corner on his 100th appearance for the club, but the revival never truly gathered momentum. Opening weekend of the WSL

Image
Six games, 18 goals, and plenty of entertainment. It's so good to have the Women's Super League back! Author | Josh D Let’s have a closer look at what happened on opening weekend. There were several talking points that we need to explore. Chelsea 2 - 1 Manchester City  The season kicked off with two of the contenders and favourites for the title. City lost at Stamford Bridge despite a promising second-half performance away against current champions Chelsea.  For all the encouraging passages of play from his reshaped City side, and a Greenwood free-kick that struck the bar, the pattern was a familiar one as Chelsea proved decisive once again when it mattered. Arsenal 4 - 1 London City Lionesses This was a positive start to the season for Arsenal. They began their WSL campaign with victory at the Emirates, though new arrivals London City Lionesses provided an early scare. Manchester United 4 - 0 Leicester City United began their Women’s Super League campaign with an emphatic...

Both Chelsea and West Ham look to get first win of the season

Image
West Ham v Chelsea Preview Chelsea are strong favourites among the experts to get three points  Author | James P Stadium | London Stadium  West Ham’s Premier League campaign got off to a disastrous start last weekend, with Graham Potter’s side suffering a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. Potter faces mounting pressure after failing to inspire the fanbase following his arrival midway through last season, and expectations were higher after a full preseason. Last week’s display suggested little progress, and with West Ham having won only one of their final eight home league games last term, patience is likely to be in short supply unless results improve quickly. Chelsea present a difficult challenge, having won each of the last three encounters and with Potter yet to defeat his former club in seven managerial meetings. Chelsea need to prove they're more than just hype While the Blues won at the London Stadium last season, they have managed only three victories...

Another chapter in an interesting career  Madueke joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for £30m and made 92 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals. Chelsea reach Club World Cup final

Chelsea 2 - 0 Fluminense Chelsea advanced to the Club World Cup final with a composed win over Fluminense Author | Lewis W Stadium | MetLife Stadium Joao Pedro marked his full debut with a brace against the club he supported as a boy.  A closer look at what happened The £55m signing from Brighton opened the scoring after 18 minutes, curling a precise effort beyond Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio after Thiago Silva failed to deal with Pedro Neto’s cross. His second, a thunderous strike that clipped the underside of the bar, came 11 minutes into the second half and effectively ended the contest. Christopher Nkunku might have extended the lead, while at the other end Marc Cucurella was alert to clear Hercules’ goalbound effort and substitute Everaldo drew a strong save. The Brazilian side were left frustrated after referee François Letexier reversed a first-half penalty decision for a handball by Trevoh Chalobah following a VAR review. But once Chelsea had edged ahead, they rarely loo...

A closer look at what happened and why it happened  Enzo Maresca was forced into four changes to his starting line-up, with as many players unavailable. Moises Caicedo missed out through suspension, while BenoĂ®t Badiashile and Romeo Lavia were not fit enough to be involved. Reece James had been expected to feature in midfield, but the captain was withdrawn shortly before kick-off, handing Andrey Santos his first start for Chelsea. Trevoh Chalobah returned at centre-back alongside Levi Colwill, while with James and both of the central midfielders from the win over Benfica unavailable, Enzo Fernández operated in a slightly deeper role alongside Santos. Chelsea decide against permanent deal for Sancho

Image
What next for Jadon Sancho? Chelsea have decided against signing Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal, choosing instead to pay a £5 million penalty to send the winger back to Manchester United. Author | Lauren W Sancho joined Chelsea on loan last summer following a breakdown in his relationship with then-United manager Erik ten Hag.  Although the 25-year-old had shown flashes of form, the Blues and the player’s representatives failed to agree terms over a long-term contract, with Sancho expected to take a pay cut from his current £300,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford. READ MORE | Chelsea news and stories READ MORE | Latest transfer news and rumours Chelsea had not paid a loan fee for the England international and had only covered half of his wages during the season. Chelsea make history in Poland

Real Betis 1 - 4 Chelsea  Enzo Maresca’s bold tactical reshuffle and astute use of personnel steered Chelsea to victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final. Author | Lewis W Stadium | Stadion WrocĹ‚aw The opening 45 minutes had offered little encouragement for the Premier League side. Betis were deservedly in front at the interval, with Isco orchestrating the first half and providing a no-look assist for Abde Ezzalzouli, who surged through to fire the Spaniards ahead inside nine minutes. But the match flipped after the break. Cole Palmer was afforded greater freedom and, capitalising on the injury-enforced withdrawal of Betis left-back Ricardo RodrĂguez, delivered a commanding display that earned him player of the match honours. Palmer's teasing, dipping delivery from a central area was then expertly glanced in by Enzo Fernández just after the hour mark. Image
Nottingham Forest 0 - 1 Chelsea Chelsea secured their place in next season’s Champions League with a narrow, hard-fought win at Nottingham Forest Author | Kieran M Stadium |  The City Ground The result confirmed a fourth-place finish for Enzo Maresca’s side and dashed any lingering hopes Forest had of qualifying for Europe’s premier competition. The decisive moment came five minutes after the break, when Levi Colwill bundled home from close range. It was enough to ensure Chelsea met the expectations set for them at the start of the campaign.  Maresca admitted afterwards that their summer transfer plans were shaped by which European competition they would be in. The win also provides timely momentum ahead of Chelsea’s appearance in the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis in Poland on Wednesday. Author - Lauren W Stadium - Stamford Bridge The result lifts the Blues to fourth in the Premier League, level on points with Nottingham Forest and one ahead of Newcastle, who face Ipswich later on Saturday. With Forest and Aston Villa involved in FA Cup semi-finals this weekend, Chelsea are guaranteed to stay in the top five at least until Thursday, when Forest take on Brentford. Nicolas Jackson secured the decisive three points, ending a 13-game goal drought dating back to December. The striker struck instinctively from 20 yards, firing low past Jordan Pickford into the bottom corner after 27 minutes. Author - Macca Stadium - Etihad Stadium The Scotland midfielder’s diving header settled a thrilling third meeting between the sides in just eight days, a contest that saw City’s Jess Park have a goal controversially ruled out after the referee failed to play advantage. Chelsea’s 31-game unbeaten run across all competitions was ended on Wednesday when City claimed a 2-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Joie Stadium. That result avenged City’s League Cup final defeat four days earlier, with the sides set to meet again in the return leg on Thursday night. Aoba Fujino levelled after the break with a stunning strike, but an unfortunate own goal from Yui Hasegawa restored Chelsea’s advantage and ended their three-year run of heartbreak in League Cup finals. Chelsea take control of Conference League tie

Image
FC Copenhagen 1 - 2 Chelsea Chelsea took a significant step towards the Europa Conference League quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Copenhagen in Denmark. Author - Lauren W Stadium - Parken Enzo Maresca’s side were uninspiring in the first half, failing to register a shot on target, but they burst into life immediately after the break. Marc Cucurella, introduced at half-time for the injured Malo Gusto, made an instant impact by surging down the left and cutting the ball back for captain Reece James, who lashed a superb low drive into the bottom corner from 30 yards out. Copenhagen came agonisingly close to an equaliser moments later when Viktor Claesson’s angled strike cannoned off the inside of the post and fell kindly into the hands of relieved Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The Blues made their hosts pay for that missed opportunity in the 65th minute. Cucurella, once again influential, won possession high up the pitch before Christopher Nkunku played in T...

Chelsea need to get back to winning ways

Chelsea v Southampton preview Two struggling teams in dire need of a turnaround meet on Tuesday night, as Chelsea host relegation-bound Southampton at Stamford Bridge. Author - Lauren W Chelsea players celebrate scoring at Southampton Enzo Maresca’s side come into the game off the back of three consecutive defeats in all competitions, the latest being a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa . Meanwhile, Southampton offered little resistance in a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. There were at least some positives for Chelsea in their response to a 3-0 hammering by Brighton earlier this month .  Maresca reportedly admitted that this loss was the "toughest" of his tenure so far. Their troubles away from home continue, with the Blues now winless in seven on the road and suffering four straight defeats. However, Stamford Bridge has been far more forgiving. Chelsea have won three of their last four home games, scoring at least twice in each, with their only defeat in their las...
