Let’s have a closer look at what happened on opening weekend. There were several talking points that we need to explore.
Chelsea 2 - 1 Manchester City
The season kicked off with two of the contenders and favourites for the title. City lost at Stamford Bridge despite a promising second-half performance away against current champions Chelsea.
For all the encouraging passages of play from his reshaped City side, and a Greenwood free-kick that struck the bar, the pattern was a familiar one as Chelsea proved decisive once again when it mattered.
Arsenal 4 - 1 London City Lionesses
This was a positive start to the season for Arsenal. They began their WSL campaign with victory at the Emirates, though new arrivals London City Lionesses provided an early scare.
Manchester United 4 - 0 Leicester City
United began their Women’s Super League campaign with an emphatic victory over Leicester. This result and performance has given Marc Skinner's side the perfect build-up to Thursday's crucial Champions League qualifier against Norwegian side SK Brann.
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 0 West Ham United
Martin Ho began his tenure as Tottenham head coach with a narrow victory over West Ham in the Women's Super League opener. Spurs struggled to create chances from open play, failing to register a single shot on target. The game was decided in the closing minutes when Eveliina Summanen won a penalty, which captain Bethany England converted to secure the win.
Liverpool 1 - 4 Everton
Summer signing Ornella Vignola scored a hat-trick on her Everton debut as the visitors hammered Liverpool at Anfield in Sunday's Women's Super League derby. The 20-year-old, who joined from Granada in the summer, could not have dreamed of a better Everton bow as she secured victory away to their bitter rivals, their fifth Merseyside derby win in five games at Anfield.
Brighton & Hove Albion 0 - 0 Aston Villa
Brighton and Aston Villa played out a goalless draw in the Women's Super League at Broadfield Stadium as England manager Sarina Wiegman watched on. Rachel Daly came close to giving Villa the lead with a powerful 25-yard strike that hit the crossbar. Brighton’s Michelle Agyemang also went close, her low effort deflecting onto the post.
