West Ham’s Premier League campaign got off to a disastrous start last weekend, with Graham Potter’s side suffering a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Potter faces mounting pressure after failing to inspire the fanbase following his arrival midway through last season, and expectations were higher after a full preseason.

Last week’s display suggested little progress, and with West Ham having won only one of their final eight home league games last term, patience is likely to be in short supply unless results improve quickly. Chelsea present a difficult challenge, having won each of the last three encounters and with Potter yet to defeat his former club in seven managerial meetings.

While the Blues won at the London Stadium last season, they have managed only three victories in their last 11 visits to West Ham, and it has been 11 years since they recorded consecutive away wins against the Hammers.

Chelsea entered the new season with considerable anticipation, following their Conference League and Club World Cup successes and a dramatic top-four finish last term. However, any optimism may have been tempered after a lacklustre performance on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca’s side were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Crystal Palace and were fortunate to escape defeat, as Eberechi Eze had a free kick controversially ruled out on a technicality. Chelsea rarely tested Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with their only effort of note coming from Liam Delap’s tame strike in the 89th minute, raising questions over the impact of several high-profile summer signings on their Premier League debuts.

The Blues now face the prospect of starting a league season with consecutive goalless draws for the first time since 1995-96, while Maresca has won just two of his last 11 league away matches.
