"It's a marathon not a sprint..." is a famous old saying that sometimes applies to a Premier campaign. Here are some examples of very impressive starts to seasons. Not all of them were champions in May.
Chelsea (2005–06) | Nine Consecutive Wins
Chelsea set the benchmark with a flawless start to the 2005–06 season, securing nine consecutive victories. Under JosĂ© Mourinho, the team dominated early matches, defeating clubs like Wigan Athletic, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur. Their streak culminated in a 5–1 triumph over Bolton Wanderers. Although their momentum was briefly halted by a draw against Everton, they went on to clinch the title with an eight-point lead over Manchester United.
Liverpool (2019–20) | Eight Wins
Newcastle United (1994–95), Chelsea (2009–10), Manchester City (2016–17), Liverpool (2018–19), Manchester City (2023–24) | Six Wins
Several teams have matched the feat of six consecutive wins to start a season. Newcastle United achieved this in the 1994–95 season, marking their dominance in the early Premier League years. Chelsea replicated this in 2009–10, while Manchester City did so in 2016–17 and again in 2023–24. Liverpool's 2018–19 season also began with six wins, reflecting their status as one of the favourites to win that season's Premier League. What's interesting is that Newcastle United, Manchester City and Liverpool failed to win the title in those seasons. Sometimes, it is a marathon and not a sprint.
Of course, English football did exist before 1992
There were actually two instances of teams bettering the season-commencing nine-match winning streak recorded by Chelsea in 2005. In the 1960/1961 season, Tottenham Hotspur won their first 11 matches and went onto lift the old First Division trophy.
In 1985/1986, Ron Atkinson's Manchester United side won their first 10 matches and looked on course to win their first championship since 1967. A disastrous middle part of the season saw them finish in 4th place. They had to wait until the first year of the Premier League before they were champions again.
