Euro 2024: England leave it late against Slovakia

Image
England 2 - 1 Slovakia Jude Bellingham saved England from an early exit in Euro 2024 against Slovakia on Sunday with a breathtaking equaliser in the 95th minute.  Harry Kane then secured their place in the quarterfinals with a winner early in extra time, sealing a 2-1 victory. Slovakia started the match much brighter and gave England several warnings before Ivan Schranz skillfully placed the ball past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 25th minute. England, who will next face Switzerland, had a history of comebacks in their last three Euro matches where they conceded first, including the previous tournament's semifinal. They thought they had equalised shortly after the break, but Phil Foden was clearly offside before he tapped the ball into the net. Kane, unusually, headed a Foden free kick wide, and Declan Rice hit the post as Slovakia were pushed deep into their own half. However, England seemed to lack confidence, and their fans grew increasingly frustrated. Bellingham, cele

International Friendly: England lose against Iceland

Image
England 0 - 1 Iceland England wrapped up their preparations for Euro 2024 with a dismal defeat against Iceland at Wembley. Manager Gareth Southgate made several changes following Monday’s win against Bosnia-Herzegovina at St James’ Park in Newcastle, but he will have been deeply disappointed with the team's lacklustre performance. Iceland, notorious for their victory over England at Euro 2016, easily exploited England's poor defending. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who replaced Jordan Pickford, might have done better with Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s low shot after 12 minutes. Harry Kane missed a great chance for England, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, one of the brighter performers, also had opportunities. However, Southgate’s side looked rusty as they finalised plans for their opening Euro 2024 match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on 16 June. England appeared vulnerable at the back throughout the match, with Iceland creating chances to extend their lead after the break. Interna

Fans, staff, players — all united as one. Those memories will live with us forever.   "It was a further reminder that with your support behind us, and the United badge on our chests, we can ach

Premier League: United errors cost them against Liverpool

Image
Manchester United 0 - 3 Liverpool  Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford. The match saw United struggle against their arch-rivals, with costly errors leading to Liverpool's goals.  The Red Devils finished the game having had more possession than the opposition but were still defeated comfortably. They looked incapable of putting more than five passes together with Liverpool regularly winning the ball back.  Ten Hag's side have lost two of their opening three matches of a Premier League campaign for the third time in the last five seasons (also happening in 2020-21 and 2022-23), with Erik ten Hag the only manager to suffer that fate twice with the club since the Premier League was formed in 1992.  A closer look at what happened Trent Alexander-Arnold had a goal disallowed for offside before Luis Diaz scored two quick goals just before halftime to give Liverpool a strong lead. Salah scored his 12th goal in 15 appearances a

Euro 2024: Netherlands eventually see off Romania

Image
Romania 0 - 3 Netherlands Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice, and Cody Gakpo netted his third goal of Euro 2024, guiding the Netherlands to a victory over a determined Romania and securing their first quarter-final berth in 16 years. Liverpool's Gakpo opened the scoring with a superb finish midway through the first half, cutting inside before driving the ball into the bottom corner. The Netherlands squandered several chances after that but ensured they didn't regret it when substitute Malen tapped in late from Gakpo's pass. Malen then sealed what was ultimately an impressive win for the Netherlands, exploiting Romania's forward push by charging towards goal and calmly slotting home. It was a vastly improved performance from the Netherlands, who initially faced intense pressure from a lively Romanian side, backed by their vibrant fans. Romania's early pressing forced errors from the Dutch, nearly capitalising when Dennis Man's shot narrowly missed. Howeve

Euro 2024: Ukraine keep hopes alive

Image
Slovakia 1 - 2 Ukraine Roman Yaremchuk scored a decisive goal for Ukraine, securing a comeback victory against Slovakia, keeping their Euro 2024 hopes alive.  The Valencia striker found the net just 13 minutes after coming on, deftly controlling Mykola Shaparenko’s pass and slipping the ball past Slovakia’s keeper, Martin Dubravka, into the bottom corner. Slovakia initially took the lead in the 17th minute through Ivan Schranz, who netted his second goal in consecutive games. However, Ukraine equalised in the 54th minute when Shaparenko converted Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross. Yaremchuk then clinched the victory ten minutes before full-time, marking Ukraine’s first comeback win at the Euros since 2012 . Ukraine’s performance was a game of two halves. Despite a shaky start, the team created numerous chances. Goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin, stepping in for Andriy Lunin , made several crucial saves early on, denying Lukas Haraslin and Schranz. He also managed to keep out David Hancko’s fr

Transfer News: United strengthen their defence

Manchester United's plans for the new season appear to be going well. The Red Devils have signed French defender Leny Yoro from Lille on a contract until 2029.  The deal is valued at €62 million (£52.18m), with an additional €8 million (£6.73m) in potential add-ons. The 18-year-old centre-back has committed to a five-year stay at Old Trafford, with an option to extend for another 12 months. Yoro, who debuted for Lille at 16, had attracted interest from Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain, and Liverpool. Last season, he made 32 league appearances, scored two goals, and was instrumental in helping Lille secure fourth place in Ligue 1 . His performances earned him a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. In total, Yoro played 44 matches across all competitions for Lille, reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League, where they were narrowly defeated on penalties by Aston Villa. Yoro's signing follows Manchester United's recent acquisition of forward Joshua Zirkz

Euro 2024 reaction: Two nations respond

Let's explore the best reaction to Scotland's thrashing against Germany You can read the European Super Football match report here:   Euro 2024: Germany win opening game  Katie, a Scotland fan, said: "In a match where the Scotland players needed to exceed expectations and be nearly flawless, I must admit I am very disappointed. I felt the keeper could have done better with the first goal; it was somewhat of a gift. But overall, Scotland lacked the bravery I expected. "In the qualifying stage against Spain, we saw that they could play bravely. However, this time, it seemed they had an inferiority complex. All the players were below par, and that is what concerns me. The players need to bounce back, but can they? That performance by Germany took the wind out of our sails." Liam, a Manchester United fan, watched the match as a neutral: "Germany were brilliant in the first 20 minutes. They conceded but it’s a good sign from their perspective that their p

Pre Season: Young United side lose opening friendly

Image
Rosenborg 1 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United got the 2024/25 pre-season campaign underway as they were beaten 1-0 by Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway. Erik ten Hag opted to select a different outfield line-up for each half at the Lerkendal Stadium, with 21 players in total getting valuable minutes in their legs after the summer. Radek Vitek was the star performer for The Red Devils as he made a multitude of spectacular saves to prevent the home side from scoring before Noah Holm struck with almost the last kick of the game. Ethan Wheatley and Ethan Ennis had the best opportunities for United, while the likes of Casemiro, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford were afforded time on the pitch seven weeks on from the FA Cup final. Some immediate reaction as United returned to action Olivia Taylor, a Manchester United fan from Chorlton, said: It was beneficial for some first team players to gain valuable playing time. I'm confident they'll be fully prepared for the August Communit

Euro 2024: Netherlands set up semi-final against England

Image
Netherlands 2 - 1 Turkey The Netherlands came from behind to defeat Turkey, setting up a Euro 2024 semi-final against England. An own goal by Mert Muldur, pressured by Cody Gakpo, helped the Dutch take the lead after trailing at half-time. Turkey's centre-back Samet Akaydin had put his team ahead, heading in Arda Guler's cross after an impressive first half. He celebrated by running to the fans, kissing his badge, and kneeling to pray, while the substitutes sprinted down the touchline. However, Turkey's joy was short-lived as the Netherlands, sluggish in the first half, came alive after the break, inspired by substitute Wout Weghorst. Stefan de Vrij equalised with a header, shortly after Weghorst made a crucial defensive interception to prevent Kaan Ayhan from scoring. Turkey nearly extended their lead when Real Madrid's Guler hit the post with a stunning free-kick but failed to capitalise on their opportunities. Now, Ronald Koeman's side will face England in Do

Transfer Rumour: Man United interested in Trevoh Chalobah

Another day and another Manchester United transfer rumour Manchester United are considering a move for Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah as they evaluate their centre-back options for next season. 🤜🤛 pic.twitter.com/tg8c8L7IWD — Trevoh Chalobah (@TrevohChalobah) May 24, 2024 Injuries in this position have been a major issue for Erik ten Hag over the past year, and the departure of Raphael Varane has further weakened the squad’s central defence. Chelsea are reportedly open to selling Chalobah and Connor Gallagher to comply with profit and sustainability rules by 30 June. They are looking for a transfer fee of around £25m. PL News: Ten Hag to stay at Manchester United

Image
Manchester United are in discussions with Erik ten Hag about a new contract, having decided he will stay on as manager for next season. Following their end-of-season review, United concluded that Ten Hag is the right person to lead them forward under the new regime headed by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Ten Hag, 54, is keen to remain at the club and has had positive discussions with United regarding their review of the season. After winning the FA Cup , he was left in limbo for two-and-a-half weeks as United considered whether to replace him. However, they felt it was important for the new ownership to conduct a thorough assessment. While Ten Hag led United to their lowest-ever Premier League finish, in eighth place, and a group-stage exit from the Champions League, they also considered his achievement of securing two trophies in as many years, including a third-place finish in his debut campaign. Ten Hag attributed last season's struggles, which he described as "horrible,

UEL: United held by Dutch side

Image
Manchester United 1 - 1 Twente Christian Eriksen experienced both triumph and disappointment for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag’s side faltered at the beginning of their Europa League journey, drawing with Twente, the Dutch manager’s boyhood club. Eriksen put United ahead in the first half with a brilliant finish from inside the box. However, a determined Twente side capitalised on Eriksen's mistake when he was dispossessed by Sam Lammers just outside United’s penalty area. The former Rangers player wasted no time, unleashing a powerful shot that flew past Andre Onana. Ten Hag's men had chances to secure a late win, but Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was in fine form, denying Joshua Zirkzee’s left-footed attempt that seemed destined for the net. Earlier, Unnerstall had also made a spectacular reflex save to stop Mees Hilgers from scoring an own goal. Bruno Fernandes, United’s captain, came close as well, and substitute Kobbie Mainoo had a penalty shout waved away. Foll

Premier League: Dull draw at Villa Park

Image
Aston Villa 0 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the hard-fought draw at Aston Villa eases some of the intense pressure surrounding his role. In contrast to recent performances, United showed signs of the resilience that had been sorely lacking during the home defeat to Tottenham and the defensive frailty witnessed against Porto in the Europa League. Ten Hag called upon experienced defenders Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans to bring stability to the backline, though Maguire was forced off with an injury just before half-time. Marcus Rashford twice tested Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, while United captain Bruno Fernandes came closest to scoring with a second-half free-kick that rattled the crossbar in front of the Holte End. Substitute Antony also drew an impressive acrobatic save from Martinez with a long-range effort. Meanwhile, United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, had a relatively quiet evening but made an excellent save to deny a power

Euro 2024: Denmark hold England

Image
England 1 - 1 Denmark England wasted the chance to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners after a draw against Denmark in Frankfurt. Pre match atmosphere in Frankfurt Gareth Southgate’s side would have topped Group C with a win after the earlier draw between Slovenia and Serbia.  Harry Kane scored in his fourth successive major tournament to give England an 18th-minute lead. Still, Denmark soon got an equaliser they deserved when Morten Hjulmand struck a thunderous 25-yard equaliser after 34 minutes. Phil Foden struck the post after the break and, while England are still at the head of their group, they must deliver vast improvements in their final group game against Slovenia. England battle to win against Serbia (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Slovenia hold Denmark to a draw (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) As an audition for potential favourites to win Euro 2024, this was a disappointing failure. The Big Discussion: Manchester United's potential midfield signings

Image
Man United target a new midfielder Let's explore some of the options that they could sign to improve their squad before the transfer window closes.  Adrien Rabiot - Free agent Rabiot, 29, is a free agent after leaving Juventus. The France international is reportedly interested in a move to the Premier League. He almost joined the Red Devils last season before signing a new one-year deal. Liam, a Manchester United fan, told us: "This would be a great signing for us. On a free transfer, it would make complete sense. He has great experience and would be a fantastic partner for Mainoo in our midfield." Manchester United are currently aiming to reduce their wage bill, so you could argue that It makes no sense to revive their interest in Rabiot. However, on a free transfer, you could make the case for the transfer to give the club more experience in the midfield. Will United sign him this summer? United's hopes of securing Rabiot's signature for a second consecuti
