Euro 2024: Denmark hold England

England 1 - 1 Denmark

England wasted the chance to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners after a draw against Denmark in Frankfurt.

Gareth Southgate’s side would have topped Group C with a win after the earlier draw between Slovenia and Serbia.

Harry Kane scored in his fourth successive major tournament to give England an 18th-minute lead. Still, Denmark soon got an equaliser they deserved when Morten Hjulmand struck a thunderous 25-yard equaliser after 34 minutes.

Phil Foden struck the post after the break and, while England are still at the head of their group, they must deliver vast improvements in their final group game against Slovenia.

As an audition for potential favourites to win Euro 2024, this was a disappointing failure. England’s players were often seen complaining about the state of the playing surface, which did deteriorate early on, but there can be no cheap excuses when they perform as poorly as this.

In the immediate aftermath of the match, the players and manager would have felt the bitter disappointment. England’s midfield was made to look so poor and lacking in a clear structure by this Denmark side. All this being said, England remains in a good position. Read the comments below from some people who believe the performance wasn't as bad as many thought in those hours after the match.

The best reaction

Liam, a Manchester United fan, was in attendance at the match. He said: "Credit must be given to Denmark. They knew precisely when to press, when to drop back, and when to pass forward. England still needs to find that balance within their team. That was the difference between the two sides."

William, a Liverpool fan from Bradford, had a similar view to Liam. He said: "That was a very commendable performance from Denmark. Each of their players delivered a nine or ten out of ten performance, brought great energy, and executed the press perfectly throughout the game. From a Danish perspective, that was very promising indeed. As an England fan, that wasn't great. Still think we can win the tournament though.

Olivia Taylor from Cholrton in Greater Manchester said: "England were tactically outmaneuvered by Denmark, who were the better team. Denmark were well-drilled, they pressed us very effectively and made England look quite average. Our best players operate at the top of the pitch, yet we set up to defend. We have too good a set of players to simply sit back, wait, and hope to get through."

Is the negative reaction over the top?

@JTho59598 posted on Twitter: "Starting to think the reaction to England's 1-1 draw with Denmark has been over the top."
