Euro 2024: Netherlands eventually see off Romania
Romania 0 - 3 Netherlands
Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice, and Cody Gakpo netted his third goal of Euro 2024, guiding the Netherlands to a victory over a determined Romania and securing their first quarter-final berth in 16 years.
Liverpool's Gakpo opened the scoring with a superb finish midway through the first half, cutting inside before driving the ball into the bottom corner.
The Netherlands squandered several chances after that but ensured they didn't regret it when substitute Malen tapped in late from Gakpo's pass.
Malen then sealed what was ultimately an impressive win for the Netherlands, exploiting Romania's forward push by charging towards goal and calmly slotting home.
It was a vastly improved performance from the Netherlands, who initially faced intense pressure from a lively Romanian side, backed by their vibrant fans.
Romania's early pressing forced errors from the Dutch, nearly capitalising when Dennis Man's shot narrowly missed.
However, Gakpo’s goal shifted the game's momentum. The Netherlands nearly extended their lead before the break, but Xavi Simons somehow missed the target.

Romania came out fighting in the second half, but the Netherlands continued to create the better chances. Memphis Depay failed to convert from close range, Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, and Gakpo's shot following a dynamic run was pushed behind.
Malen, who entered at half-time, scored twice in the final 10 minutes, averting any late drama. The Netherlands now look forward to facing either Turkey or a rematch with Austria in the quarter-finals.
The Netherlands started the tournament decently, securing their place in the last 16 with four points from two games.
However, their 3-2 defeat by Austria in the third group game caused concern. They were sluggish, error-prone, and lacked cohesion, prompting some senior players to publicly vow improvement against Romania.
There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout
Initially, this improvement didn't materialise, and the usually lively Dutch fans were subdued. But after Gakpo’s goal, the team displayed moments of brilliance, attacking with pace and precision that could have resulted in more goals.
The missed chances might be a concern against stronger opponents, but the return to a high-tempo style of football has undoubtedly pleased their fantastic supporters.

Many of their players were just super. They will pose tough opposition for any team left in Euro 2024 as they create so many scoring opportunities."
Mark from Preston added: "Congratulations, Netherlands. Also, well done, Romania. Your supporters should be proud."
