Premier League: United errors cost them against Liverpool

Manchester United 0 - 3 Liverpool

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Old Trafford watched on - 1

The match saw United struggle against their arch-rivals, with costly errors leading to Liverpool's goals. The Red Devils finished the game having had more possession than the opposition but were still defeated comfortably. They looked incapable of putting more than five passes together with Liverpool regularly winning the ball back.

Ten Hag's side have lost two of their opening three matches of a Premier League campaign for the third time in the last five seasons (also happening in 2020-21 and 2022-23), with Erik ten Hag the only manager to suffer that fate twice with the club since the Premier League was formed in 1992.

A closer look at what happened

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a goal disallowed for offside before Luis Diaz scored two quick goals just before halftime to give Liverpool a strong lead. Salah scored his 12th goal in 15 appearances against United after 56 minutes, beating Andre Onana with a pass from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Same old problems? What exactly is going wrong for Manchester United?

It's hard to say. This felt like same old, same old for the United manager. Liverpool didn't even play particularly well but still won with ease. With an international break approaching, United will be looking to regroup and improve before their next fixture against Southampton on 14th September.

One local journalist posted this after the match: "United's midfield and defence struggled to cope with the dynamic and energetic play of Liverpool's midfield and attack. It was a disappointing afternoon for Erik ten Hag and his players."

What are the fans saying?

Liam, a Manchester United fan, was confused by the performance. He said: "There was great excitement before the match. The atmosphere was great and it felt like the crowd was up for it. Things started to go wrong after the first few minutes and we never recovered. The rest of September is going to be huge for Ten Hag and the club. Can they recover?"

Olivia Taylor, another United fan, added: "Simply outclassed and out-muscled in midfield. Liverpool took their chances. From a United perspective, there has been no improvement on last season so far."
