Premier League: Palace stun Liverpool again

Image
Liverpool 0 - 1 Crystal Palace  Crystal Palace have done it against Liverpool again.  Older fans of the London club would have been taken back to the 1990 FA Cup semi-final. Younger fans would have been remembering that stunning comeback from 3-0 down in 2014 that wrecked their title chances. What is it about Palace and destroying Liverpool's trophy dreams? The reaction to the final whistle suggested that this was a hugely damaging week for Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp congratulated his opponent on a Crystal Palace victory that has reverberated at both ends of the table before puffing out his cheeks and shaking his head in despair.  At the end of the match, Andy Robertson looked like he was in a trance. The home fans filed out of Anfield in total silence. In a title race with the tightest margins, Liverpool have blinked first.  Arsenal, would of course, blink later on in the day. This ultimately makes it advantage for Manchester City. It's starting to look like the pressure is

Premier League: United battle to hold Liverpool

Image
Liverpool 0 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United provided a much-needed boost to manager Erik ten Hag's morale by securing a hard-fought draw against Liverpool at Anfield.  This came at a crucial time when the team was grappling with a sense of crisis following a heavy home defeat to Bournemouth and a lacklustre Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich . Despite facing adversity and an injury-hit squad, United managed to halt their recent decline, albeit with a less-than-stellar performance.  The match, marred by mediocrity, saw Diogo Dalot being sent off for dissent in stoppage time. Nevertheless, Ten Hag had reasons to smile, contrasting with the disappointment felt by Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, whose team missed an opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League. United goalkeeper Andre Onana made a crucial save in the first half, denying Virgil van Dijk, while Rasmus Hojlund had a promising chance in the second half, only to be thwarted by Liverp

Premier League: Forest stun Liverpool

Image
Liverpool 0 - 1 Nottingham Forest Callum Hudson-Odoi and an unbeaten Nottingham Forest shocked Liverpool at Anfield, putting an end to Arne Slot's flawless start as Liverpool manager. Coming off the bench, Hudson-Odoi cut in from the left and curled a perfectly placed shot into the far bottom corner, leaving Alisson with no chance. This marked Forest's first win at Anfield in any competition since 1969. Liverpool had come into the game brimming with confidence, having secured three consecutive wins without conceding a goal. And the home side certainly had the better opportunities in the first half. Luis Diaz came closest for the hosts before the break, chasing down what seemed a lost cause, cutting inside, and smashing a shot against the near post from a tight angle. Forest keeper Matz Sels made an important save to deny Alexis Mac Allister's header and had a lucky escape when he almost let Diaz’s shot slip into his own net moments later. After the break, Forest showed

Premier League: United and Liverpool play out another chaotic classic

Manchester United 2 - 2 Liverpool "I genuinely feared that we'd be beaten heavily by Liverpool again. I was pleasantly surprised by the result, especially after the first 45 minutes." Those words were sent to us by Liam, a Manchester United Season Ticket holder . He was in the Stretford End as United drew with Liverpool for the second time in the Premier League this season.  How did the drama unfold? Liverpool missed the chance to climb to the top of the Premier League in another thrilling match at Old Trafford. Manager Jurgen Klopp and his players will be left wondering how they failed to avenge the FA Cup quarter-final loss last month. The Anfield side missed numerous chances and were dominating the hosts for long periods. The away side only had a Luis Diaz strike to show for almost total first-half superiority in which they had 15 shots to none from United. The United boss Erik Ten Hag would have been thankful for the visitors' wastefulness and saves from keeper

FA Cup: Liverpool win second trophy of the season

Image
Chelsea 0 - 0 Liverpool (Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties) Liverpool won their second trophy of the season and they keep their quadruple dream alive After a tense 120 minutes, Liverpool triumphed on penalties. They have won the FA Cup for the first time since 2006.  Before the drama of the penalties, it was a close fairly close game for the majority, even if Liverpool did have more shots. Chelsea did have their moments.  Both sides struggled to find that finishing touch and it finished 0-0. In the end, it was won on penalties.  Liverpool quickly gained the advantage in the shootout after César Azpilicueta hit the post with the second Blues spot-kick. Sadio Mané then wasted the chance to win it earlier with a weak fifth kick. Mason Mount then missed Chelsea’s seventh kick, allowing Tsimikas to slide in the winner. Premier League: Salah equaliser earns point for Liverpool

Image
Arsenal 2 - 2 Liverpool Mohamed Salah’s late equaliser salvaged a point for Liverpool in a lively clash against Premier League title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Author - Peter Grainger from GMCR Football Arsenal took the lead twice but were hampered by injuries to key defenders Gabriel and Jurrien Timber in the second half, already missing the suspended William Saliba. These setbacks opened the door for Liverpool to push back and claim a point, allowing Manchester City to remain at the top of the table, with Arsenal now trailing the relentless champions by five points. A closer look at what happened Arsenal’s strong start to this enthralling encounter paid off on the 9th minute when Bukayo Saka left Andy Robertson floundering, netting his 50th Premier League goal in the process. However, the lead was short-lived. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk drew them level in the 18th minute, heading in from close range after Luis Díaz flicked on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s near-pos

Premier League: Bournemouth boost their survival chances

Image
AFC Bournemouth 1 - 0  Liverpool Mohamed Salah's awful penalty miss helped Bournemouth climb out of the relegation zone after an excellent win that damaged Liverpool's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League. PL reaction: Liverpool 7 - 0 Manchester United Back down to earth with a bump Jurgen Klopp's were brought back down to earth after last week's 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United as the Cherries did their survival chances a power of good. Liverpool were punished for poor defending when the unmarked Philip Billing struck after fine work by Dango Ouattara. Virgil van Dijk had a header cleared off the line at 0-0 and substitute Diogo Jota was denied by Neto's fine save. This was before Liverpool won a penalty when the Portugal forward's header was handled by Adam Smith. However, Salah blazed the penalty wide much to the delight of Bournemouth's fans. While the win ensured Bournemouth finished the day 17th, Liverpool missed the chanc

FA Cup: United and Liverpool play out a classic

Image
Manchester United 4 - 3 Liverpool Manchester United secured their spot in the FA Cup semi-final after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. Before the game, everyone was talking about how strong Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team was, but from the start, it was United who came out swinging with some serious attacking moves. Just 10 minutes in, Alejandro Garnacho took a shot that got deflected, Caoimhin Kelleher tried to save it, but it ended up right in the path of Scott McTominay. Old Trafford erupted.  Liverpool fought back hard , and just before halftime, they managed to sneak in a couple of goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, putting them at half-time. The second half was tense, with both teams hunting for that next crucial goal. It wasn't until the home side made some attacking changes, thanks to Ten Hag's tactical moves, that the home side started to put some pressure. They finally found the equaliser. Antony, coming off the bench, save

PL: Leicester City get revenge on Liverpool

Image
Leicester City 1 - 0 Liverpool Ademola Lookman scored the only goal of the match as Leicester City beat Liverpool. This leaves the Reds six points off the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool's best chances came in the first half when Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel and the Egyptian headed the rebound off the bar. Sadio Mane then wasted a couple of chances for Jurgen Klopp's side. The 2020 Premier League champions were made to pay by the hosts in the 59th minute. Lookman, with only his fourth touch after coming on, took Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's pass in his stride, beat Liverpool's Joel Matip and fired a shot past Alisson. This was Leicester's only shot on target. Leicester hung on despite the relentless late Liverpool pressure. This all came just six days after blowing a 3-1 lead to lose on penalties against the same opposition in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This result was all the more remarkable given the home side's

Premier League: West Ham hold Liverpool to a draw

Image
West Ham United 2 - 2 Liverpool  Liverpool's title hopes were dented again after Michail Antonio scored to rescue a point for West Ham at the London Stadium. Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring just before the break when he rose highest to meet Mohammed Kudus' cross. At this point, Liverpool were showing little evidence that their Merseyside derby loss in midweek had done much in the way of spurring them on. Klopp's side were much improved in the second half and Andy Robertson equalised when he scored from Luis Diaz's low pass into the penalty area. Liverpool were then rewarded again for their pressure when Cody Gakpo's effort from a corner deflected off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Areola before finding the back of the net. Antonio's fine header put the Hammers back on level terms two minutes before Liverpool brought on Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian couldn't win the game for Liverpool and appeared to have fallen out with the manager.  You can w

Premier League: Liverpool see off Chelsea

Liverpool 2 - 1 Chelsea Arne Slot's outstanding start as Liverpool manager continued as his side saw off a clearly improved Chelsea at Anfield. Author - Katrine Jonnson  Chelsea are now winless in their last ten matches against Liverpool, including losses in the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup final in 2022, both decided by penalties, along with a defeat at Wembley in extra time last season. Slot is the first Liverpool boss to win 10 of his first 11 games, with this latest victory putting them a point clear of  Manchester City after their dramatic stoppage-time win at Wolves. A closer look at what happened Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead after 29 minutes, converting a penalty following Levi Colwill’s foul on Curtis Jones.  Just before half-time, Liverpool were awarded a second penalty when Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez brought down Jones, but after initially being given by referee John Brooks, the decision was overturned by VAR. #LIVCHE – 45+2’ VAR OVERTURN The refere

Premier League: Arsenal prove their title credentials

Image
Arsenal 3 - 1 Liverpool Arsenal narrowed Liverpool's lead at the summit of the Premier League to two points following a well-deserved victory at the Emirates Stadium. Before this dramatic match, Arsenal believed that a loss would have hugely negatively impacted their title chances. Their cause was significantly aided by two blunders from Liverpool's typically reliable goalkeeper, Alisson, who generously handed Arsenal the goals securing three vital points. The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes as Arsenal handed Liverpool only their second league defeat this season, the first since a highly controversial loss at Tottenham in late September. Arsenal reaped the rewards of a swift start when Bukayo Saka provided a 14th-minute lead , slotting home a rebound after Alisson saved from Kai Havertz. Despite dominating proceedings, defensive chaos allowed Liverpool to level seconds before the break, with Gabriel inadvertently turning the ball into his own net following a mix-up bet

Transfer Rumours: Salah on the move?

Image
Mo Salah has been linked with a move away from Liverpool Where could he go? The Egyptian forward is the one Liverpool superstar the club may be willing to sell this summer who could secure a huge fee. The red side of Merseyside are planning a major overhaul on the back of a poor campaign amid takeover speculation and upheaval behind the scenes. Where will the rebuild go next? Title winner Sadio Mane was sold last summer to make way for the club-record Darwin Nunez signing. It will need a similar star-player departure to enable Jurgen Klopp and the club’s recruitment team to bring in the players to try and kickstart a new era. The big question for Liverpool fans (discussed further down the page) is who they would replace Salah with him. Salah's been a huge player for Liverpool In 2017, Salah signed for Liverpool for a then-club record transfer of £36.9 million. In his first season, he set the record for most Premier League goals scored in a 38-game season and helped Liverpool to

UCL: Liverpool thrashed and facing trophyless season

Liverpool 2 - 5 Real Madrid Liverpool are facing a season without a trophy after being thrashed by Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie. UCL: Real Madrid win Champions League (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Darwin Nunez's brilliant flick put Liverpool ahead after only four minutes before Mohamed Salah cashed in on Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' awful clearance to double their lead around 10 minutes later. It then all started to go very wrong Vinicius Junior's superb strike after 21 minutes pulled a goal back before Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson hacked a clearance straight at the Brazilian, holding his head in anguish as the ball looped behind him into the net in front of a shocked Kop End. It was at this point when Will, a Liverpool fan f

WSL: Liverpool shock Chelsea on opening day

Liverpool Women 2 - 1 Chelsea Women Liverpool striker Katie Stengel scored two penalties in the second half to send a record crowd at Prenton Park into a frenzy. Fran Kirby had given Chelsea the lead within three minutes of kick-off from the penalty spot before the hosts mounted a stunning comeback. Chelsea are bidding to win a fourth successive WSL title this season, while two-time champions Liverpool are back in the top flight after a two-year absence. Reaction from  The Anfield Wrap - YouTube Matt Beard's side were made to work hard for their victory but Stengel's double was cheered deliriously by over 3,000 people at Prenton Park. Kirby kept her cool and Chelsea began to dominate possession, though Liverpool carried a threat in attack. Kerr had a goal disallowed for offside when she thumped in a half-volley from the

PL News: Slot confirmed as Liverpool manager

Image
Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has been announced as Liverpool's new boss. In April, Liverpool struck a deal with the Dutch club after deciding the 45-year-old Slot was the right person to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Klopp, who had been at the helm since October 2015, departed following Liverpool's season-ending victory over Wolves on Sunday. After the match, the 56-year-old German urged Liverpool supporters to back their new manager, leading a chant of "Arne Slot, na na na na na". Slot will officially begin his three-year tenure at Liverpool on 1 June, pending a work permit. During his time at Feyenoord, Slot guided the team to the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 seaso n, and this year they won the Dutch Cup and finished as league runners-up. Liverpool were particularly impressed by Slot's attacking style, his personality, and his ability to develop players, which made him their top candidate. Slot, who took charge at Feyenoord in 2021, expressed his inter

Premier League: United errors cost them against Liverpool

Image
Manchester United 0 - 3 Liverpool  Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford. The match saw United struggle against their arch-rivals, with costly errors leading to Liverpool's goals.  The Red Devils finished the game having had more possession than the opposition but were still defeated comfortably. They looked incapable of putting more than five passes together with Liverpool regularly winning the ball back.  Ten Hag's side have lost two of their opening three matches of a Premier League campaign for the third time in the last five seasons (also happening in 2020-21 and 2022-23), with Erik ten Hag the only manager to suffer that fate twice with the club since the Premier League was formed in 1992.  A closer look at what happened Trent Alexander-Arnold had a goal disallowed for offside before Luis Diaz scored two quick goals just before halftime to give Liverpool a strong lead.
