The decisive moment in the match came in the second half when Donny van de Beek, formerly of Manchester United and Everton, clipped Luis DÃaz's heel in the box, handing Liverpool a spot-kick.
Salah made no mistake, coolly converting from 12 yards and wrong-footing Girona's goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, to notch his 46th Champions League goal.
At the other end, Alisson Becker, back in the Liverpool team, pulled off several excellent saves to preserve the Reds' unbeaten run in this season's competition. With this victory, Liverpool maintain their perfect record and top the league-phase table. A single point from their remaining two matches will guarantee a top-eight finish, ensuring progression to the last 16.
Liverpool could even secure their spot earlier if other results go their way this week.
Looking ahead, the Reds will travel to face Lille and host PSV Eindhoven in January, aiming to continue their winning streak. Having already booked a place in the knockout-phase play-offs, Jürgen Klopp's side remains in prime position to make a deep run in the tournament.
Alisson return is a huge positive for Liverpool
Alisson made his return to action after recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained during Liverpool's win at Crystal Palace on 5 October.
In his absence, Caoimhin Kelleher stepped up and delivered some solid performances, although the stand-in keeper was at fault for Newcastle’s late equaliser in last week’s 3-3 draw.
Back in the starting XI, Brazil's Alisson showed his class with crucial saves to deny Bryan Gil, Miguel Gutiérrez, and Yaser Asprilla in the first half. The 32-year-old also thwarted Arnaut Danjuma from a tight angle in the second.
Salah is still Liverpool's king
Unsurprisingly, it was Mohamed Salah who proved decisive once again. The Egyptian forward continues to deliver for Liverpool, scoring his 16th goal in 22 appearances across all competitions this season, including seven in his last six outings.
Liverpool’s impressive form under Jürgen Klopp rolls on, with the team now unbeaten in 18 matches since their defeat to Nottingham Forest on 14 September, winning 16 and drawing two during this stretch.
