Iconic Euros Moments: Throwback to England v Scotland (1996)

Image
It's time to explore another iconic Euros moment.  Let's throwback to Euro 96. This was the first time England and Scotland had met in a major competition in seven years. A tactical analysis Terry Venables' 4-4-1-1 from the previous match gave way to something a little different. Manchester United's Gary Neville , who had just won the double with other members of the 'class of 92' was to join Stuart Pearce in flanking Tony Adams in a back three. Gareth Southgate stepped into midfield alongside Paul Ince, with Paul Gascoigne tasked with being a central creative outlet. Teddy Sheringham was to work off Alan Shearer up front. Darren Anderton and Steve McManaman would be rotated frequently between the wings throughout this match and the rest of Euro 96.  A brief match report After a scrappy, nervous first half, England stepped up a gear, and a peak-form Alan Shearer scored his second goal of the tournament with a superb header from a Gary Neville cross in the f

History of the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United

Image

Gary Neville is a player that often symbolised the rivalry between the two clubs. This means more! Fans and players of both clubs have often argued that this rivalry means more than each local rivalry. People have often said hat the rivalry has been fuelled by the proximity of the two major cities that they represent, their historic economic and industrial rivalry, significant periods of domestic footballing dominance and European success, and their popularity at home and abroad, as two of the biggest-earning and widely supported football clubs in the world. Each club can also claim a level of historical supremacy. They are the most successful English teams in domestic, European and worldwide competitions. Between them they have won 39 league titles,

FA Cup: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 - 1 Salford City

Image
Salford City avoided an FA Cup upset as they narrowly beat side Dagenham and Redbridge Salford took a third-minute lead when Jordan Turnbull powerfully headed in from a left-wing corner. The scoreline remained at 1-0 and the League Two side are now just one game away from a potential match against the likes of Manchester United. Who will Gary Neville support if the team he co-owns faces the team he spent his entire career at? They have never made it into the third round of the FA Cup, also losing in the second round in 2015-16. So further progress would mean history from the club. More reaction  After the match, Salford's official Twitter account posted: "Thank you to Dagenham & Redbridge for your hospitality, and best wishes for the remainder of your season." Another Salford City fan told us: "It wasn't the best performance from us. However, we are through to the next round and this is the main thing." A special page dedicated to the FA Cup  The home si

However, United's goalkeeper Andre Onana made crucial saves, and Garnacho's goal remained the only highlight of the first half. United introduced 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who made a clearance off the line. Everton's missed opportunities proved costly as Ashley Young was judged to have fouled Anthony Martial in the box, leading to Marcus Rashford confidently converting the penalty. Although Fernandes typically takes penalties for Unite

Sliding Doors Moments: What if Shearer signed for Manchester United in 1996?

Image
The first sliding doors moment we are going to explore involves Manchester United and Alan Shearer. Author - Liam C In the summer of 1996, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made a huge effort to sign England striker Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers.  Shearer was the most prolific goal scorer in English football at the time, having just won the Premier League Golden Boot in both 1995 and 1996.  Ultimately, Shearer chose to join his boyhood club, Newcastle United, for a then-record fee of £15 million. However, an alternative scenario in which Shearer decided to sign for Manchester United could have dramatically affected both the club and the footballing landscape in the Premier League. The Old Trafford club decided to sign a certain unheard-of Norwegian at the time. He didn't do too badly... So, what if Shearer moved to Manchester United in 1996? In this alternate reality, Manchester United sign Shearer and he joins a team fresh off winning the Premier League and FA C
