Championship: Bristol City rescue point in Severnside derby

Image
Bristol City 1 - 1 Cardiff City Luke McNally's powerful header earned Bristol City a hard-fought point in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Cardiff in the Severnside derby. Cardiff's Anwar El Ghazi came close to scoring in the first half, hitting the post from close range in what was otherwise a period dominated by Bristol City. However, it was Cardiff who took the lead after the break, with Ollie Tanner producing a moment of magic—beating two defenders and smashing the ball into the top corner after Bristol City carelessly lost possession. Cardiff had chances to extend their lead but were wasteful, and they paid the price when McNally headed in the equaliser on 73 minutes. This came after Fally Mayulu hit the post, and Cardiff struggled to clear the resulting pressure fully. A draw seemed a fair outcome, though it did little to boost either side’s momentum ahead of the international break. Both teams have had underwhelming seasons, with Bristol City sitting 17th in the Champio...

Image
Portsmouth 3 - 0 Bristol City Portsmouth climbed off the bottom of the Championship table with a convincing win over Bristol City at Fratton Park. Author - Jack L Fresh from their strong first-half display against Swansea last week, Pompey got off to another lively start. Colby Bishop opened the scoring inside 20 minutes, reacting quickest to slot home a rebound after his initial shot was parried by Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary. Josh Murphy doubled the advantage just after the hour mark, and Callum Lang added a third with a close-range header at the back post less than 10 minutes later. The victory, Portsmouth's third of the season, moves them up to 23rd place, leapfrogging Hull City, while Bristol City remain in mid-table. The Big Discussion: Players to watch in the EFL

Image
As we prepare for another summer of teams across England and beyond spending even more money, clubs will be looking to explore the occasional bargain. Will any of these players come from the EFL? This article will explore some of the players that clubs from across Europe might be looking at.  Sam Bell – Bristol City While Bristol City’s season was a bit up and down, Bell’s performances were highly impressive throughout. Numerous spells in non-league football helped Bell develop his game, and Bristol City’s patience in nurturing the young forward appears to be paying off. His versatility makes him an attractive option for clubs after an adaptable forward player, with Bell also occupying the left side of the pitch. Bristol City fans would be sad to see him leave to the Premier League but they will probably admit that he deserves a chance to play at that higher level.  Jaden Philogene – Hull City  Jaden Philogene hogged the limelight at Hull City and was in scint...

The top EFL talent. Who has a big future ahead of them?

Image
This article will explore some of the top talent in the English Football League Are there any players in the Championship, League One or League Two that could be soon signed by a Premier League side? The leagues below the Premier League are arguably the perfect breeding ground for England's top talent.  Alex Scott - Bristol City After an impressive breakthrough season in 2021-22, this is a player hoping for even bigger things he looks to carry on establishing himself among the country’s top talent. He starred for Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City side last season and launched himself onto the international stage by helping England win the Under-19s European Championship.  In the 2021/2022 season, only Callum Doyle (3,109) played more league minutes across the top four tiers in England than Scott (2,762) while aged 18 or younger. Ryan Giles - Middlesbrough The Wolverhampton Wanderers academy graduate is only 22. However,  he’s already played 115 senior career games over thr...

Scotland: Dundee derby proves to be a thriller

Image
Dundee United 2 - 2 Dundee Dundee twice came from behind to deny Dundee United a victory in their Scottish Premiership return, as the first city derby in over two years lived up to its billing as the game of the weekend. There was a fantastic atmosphere created by both sets of fans. After a dull start on Saturday with two 0-0 draws, three early goals set the new top-flight season ablaze. Dundee gave their hosts a guard of honour before last season's Championship flag was raised, then left Kristijan Trapanovski plenty of space to slot the opener after just 13 minutes. Seb Palmer-Houlden equalised from close range five minutes later, but Miller Thomson restored United's lead with a similar finish—all within the first 15 minutes of the game. United deserved their lead, but Dundee finished stronger in a thrilling end that saw a Luke McCowan penalty 11 minutes from time. Dundee United now remain unbeaten in seven derbies , while Dundee have not won at Tannadice in their last 13...

EFL: Southampton recover after midweek defeat

Image
West Brom 0 - 2 Southampton Southampton made an impressive recovery after their long unbeaten streak came to an end during the week, as they comfortably defeated West Bromwich Albion to reclaim the second spot in the Championship. Just three nights after suffering a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, their first loss in 25 games, Russell Martin's strong and efficient team secured a victory against fifth-placed Albion with well-executed goals from Ryan Fraser and David Brooks in each half. Although Albion were thrown off by the early departure of head coach Carlos Corberan, who was unexpectedly shown a red card for attempting to retrieve the ball from his technical area before it had gone out of play, the hosts failed to put up much resistance against Southampton. It was only their fourth home league defeat in 31 games since Corberan took charge 16 months ago. The incident that led to Corberan's dismissal seemed to unsettle West Brom, but Southampton's Adam Armstrong had alre...

It was so nearly a huge upset though.  The Red Devils took control early on, with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo (his first for the club) within the first twelve minutes. Bryn Morris's late first-half strike and Will Evans' equaliser for County just after the restart kept the game alive.  However, late finishes from Antony and Rasmus Højlund secured United's place in the next round of the competition where they will face an away match against Forest or Bristol City. Euro 2024 preview: Can Scotland do more than just boogie

Image
"Yes sir, I can boogie..." Can Scotland achieve what they've never done before by advancing from the group stage in a major tournament? After successfully qualifying from a challenging group that included Spain and Norway, hopes were high for such an achievement. However, Steve Clarke’s team then endured a run of seven games without a win (before a hard-fought victory against Gibraltar). While defeats to France, England, the Netherlands, and Spain were expected, losing to Northern Ireland was more concerning. For the first time in a while, the team appeared deflated. This dip in confidence might not be entirely detrimental. Overconfident Scots often struggle. In 1978, the team left for the World Cup amid great fanfare but failed to deliver. Clarke has assembled a capable side that should believe they can finish above Hungary and Switzerland, though they still lag behind the group’s standout team, Germany, in terms of overall ability.
