Luke McNally's powerful header earned Bristol City a hard-fought point in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Cardiff in the Severnside derby.

Cardiff's Anwar El Ghazi came close to scoring in the first half, hitting the post from close range in what was otherwise a period dominated by Bristol City. However, it was Cardiff who took the lead after the break, with Ollie Tanner producing a moment of magic—beating two defenders and smashing the ball into the top corner after Bristol City carelessly lost possession.

Cardiff had chances to extend their lead but were wasteful, and they paid the price when McNally headed in the equaliser on 73 minutes. This came after Fally Mayulu hit the post, and Cardiff struggled to clear the resulting pressure fully.

A draw seemed a fair outcome, though it did little to boost either side’s momentum ahead of the international break. Both teams have had underwhelming seasons, with Bristol City sitting 17th in the Championship and Cardiff languishing in 24th.

Liam Manning’s side came into the game on the back of two consecutive draws, including a 0-0 stalemate with Sheffield Wednesday, and remained unchanged for this derby clash. Cardiff's interim manager Omer Riza also stuck with the same team that secured their first win of the season against Millwall.

Cardiff have had the upper hand in recent Severnside derbies, winning the previous three meetings. The match started with the hosts looking dangerous, as Sinclair Armstrong’s powerful shot was tipped over by Cardiff goalkeeper Jac Alnwick. Armstrong continued to trouble Cardiff’s defence, but Alnwick stood strong, pushing another effort wide.

Despite Bristol City's early pressure, Cardiff missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when El Ghazi skewed a shot wide after a mishit attempt by Callum Robinson turned into a perfect cross.

Bristol City's woes deepened when Cameron Pring was stretchered off to applause after just 18 minutes. The Robins remained a threat, though, with McNally heading wide and Anis Mehmeti firing over, while Armstrong missed from a tight angle.

Cardiff, having lost five of their last six away league games, came out stronger in the second half. Tanner’s shot was deflected just wide before the winger broke the deadlock with a brilliant goal. Rubin Colwill found him in space, and Tanner weaved past two defenders before hammering the ball into the top corner.

Bristol City’s earlier fluid passing faltered as they repeatedly gave the ball away, and Tanner missed another great chance after being picked out by Colwill. Cardiff were cutting through the Robins’ defence with ease, but their finishing let them down—Colwill, too, missing a clear opportunity from Tanner’s pinpoint cross.

The Bluebirds were eventually punished for their missed chances when Joe Williams won possession and delivered a superb cross to McNally, who powered a header into the corner of the net after Cardiff failed to clear the ball properly.

Bristol City pressed for a winner, with Scott Twine—who had scored in his last two games against Cardiff—seeing his close-range shot blocked, but the Robins couldn’t find a way through, and the match ended all square.
