Coming off the bench, Barnes curled a beauty from 20 yards out with just 10 minutes remaining, shortly after Fabian Schar had levelled the game.

Wolves had taken the lead through Mario Lemina’s first goal since February, but Gary O'Neil's side are still searching for their first win after four games.

A closer look at what happened

Newcastle looked lively in the early stages of the game, with Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone tipping over Jacob Murphy's effort after the winger burst forward. This sparked a heated exchange between O'Neil and his defender, Craig Dawson.

The Magpies kept the pressure on, and Anthony Gordon nearly doubled their advantage, hitting the post after a slick dribble past Nelson Semedo and nutmegging Yerson Mosquera.

Wolves eventually found their feet, and Lemina fired them ahead nine minutes before the break, coolly finishing off Jorgen Strand Larsen’s cross after a clever dummy from Joao Gomes.

At half-time, Eddie Howe had seen enough and made a triple substitution, bringing on Barnes, Sandro Tonali, and Joe Willock for Aleksandar Isak, Sean Longstaff, and Joelinton.

However, the changes didn’t pay off straight away. Wolves nearly extended their lead when Strand Larsen hit the post, and Nick Pope had to pull off a couple of crucial saves to deny both Strand Larsen and Matheus Cunha.

Newcastle finally got their breakthrough with 15 minutes to go, as Schar’s long-range strike deflected off Craig Dawson and found the back of the net. Then, Barnes stepped up with a stunning winner.

Pope was called into action again in stoppage time to keep out Cunha, and Barnes almost added a third, only to dink wide when one-on-one with Johnstone.

A hard-fought win for Newcastle, who showed grit to turn it around and maintain their impressive start to the season.
