What kind of player are Newcastle signing?

Ramsey, 24-years-old, is athletic, adaptable and eager to improve, qualities that suggest he could thrive under Eddie Howe. For Ramsey, a lifelong Aston Villa supporter who joined his boyhood club at the age of six, leaving Villa Park will have been a wrench. Yet his comments on the appeal of working with Howe felt telling as he completed his move to St James’ Park.

Howe has helped Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento establish themselves as England internationals, and it would be no surprise if Ramsey were to follow that path.

Newcastle have options in midfield and on the left, but with a season that will demand strength in depth across four competitions, Ramsey is likely to play a significant role.

After a sluggish start to the transfer window, Howe has now added Ramsey, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale to raise competition in key areas. The glaring gap remains up front.

End of an era for Villa and Ramsey

He rose through Aston Villa’s academy after joining the club at a young age. He went on to make 137 senior appearances, scoring 14 goals between 2019 and 2025.

This move ends an 18-year association with his boyhood club and drawing an emotional response from fans and senior teammates.

Where else do Newcastle need to strengthen?

With Callum Wilson leaving last month, Newcastle are still searching for a striker. Anthony Gordon led the line in Alexander Isak’s absence on the opening day, but Brentford’s Yoane Wissa is among the forwards under consideration.

The recent 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on opening weekend was perhaps the biggest sign that Villa need reinforcements. The fans songs around Isak show that the Geordie faithful are waiting for a new hero.
