Eddie Howe had urged his players to embrace, rather than be overwhelmed by, the atmosphere at the Nou Camp in this last-16 second leg. For a time, they did just that.
Newcastle showed resilience in a breathless first half, twice drawing level through the pace and composure of Anthony Elanga. His finishes cancelled out early efforts from Raphinha and Marc Bernal, ensuring the visitors remained firmly in the contest.
Even after Lamine Yamal converted a penalty in stoppage time to edge Barcelona 3-2 ahead, the tie still felt alive at the interval.
It unravelled quickly after the restart
FermĂn LĂłpez extended the lead before Raphinha and Lewandowski took control, the latter striking twice to underline the gulf in clinical edge. What had been a contest became a procession, ending Newcastle’s European campaign in emphatic fashion.
The night began poorly for the visitors. Sloppy defending allowed Raphinha to exchange passes with LĂłpez and finish low into the corner. Newcastle responded swiftly, Elanga turning in Lewis Hall’s driven cross at the back post.
Barcelona restored their advantage when Gerard MartĂn headed back across goal for Bernal to convert, but the momentum continued to swing. Harvey Barnes found Elanga once more, and the forward’s first-time finish silenced the stadium again.
Another turning point arrived just before the break. Kieran Trippier was penalised following a VAR review for pulling back Raphinha, and Yamal calmly dispatched the resulting spot-kick.
Barcelona took full control early in the second half. Raphinha’s incisive pass released LĂłpez to score, before Lewandowski headed in from a corner and added another with a powerful finish.
Raphinha completed the scoring after capitalising on a misplaced pass from Jacob Ramsey, sealing a comprehensive aggregate victory.
Barcelona will now Atletico in the quarter-finals after they knocked out Tottenham Hotspur.
