Danny Rohl’s team were booed off at half-time, two goals down and fortunate the margin was not greater. Only Jack Butland’s sharp goalkeeping and some wasteful Roma finishing spared further damage.
Lorenzo Pellegrini’s exquisite strike ten minutes before the interval effectively settled the contest, the captain guiding home after a flowing Roma move. Earlier, his teasing corner had been glanced on by Matias Soule, the Argentine forward heading into an empty net to give the visitors the lead.
At 2-0, memories resurfaced of the heavy Champions League qualifying defeat by Brugge in August. Rangers rarely troubled Mile Svilar, though Djeidi Gassama’s lively runs at least forced some defensive scrambling from the Italians.

Rangers were slightly better in the second-half
Rangers were brighter after the break, pushing higher and testing Roma more often, but their finishing remained blunt. Youssef Chermiti squandered two presentable chances, while substitutes Danilo and Bojan Miovski failed to make a difference.
The defeat leaves Rangers bottom of their group with a steep climb ahead if they are to retain any hope of progression.
For Roma, it was a comfortable evening that could easily have brought more goals. Zeki Celik somehow contrived to hit the crossbar from point-blank range, yet the Serie A side were rarely troubled and their second win of the campaign was achieved in cruise control.
There was a big gulf between the sides from the first kick
Roma were more assured in possession, with technically superior players and a fluid style that allowed them to control the ball and exploit the spaces Rangers were forced to concede.
Their position just a point behind Napoli at the top of Serie A is no surprise. Even missing key players, they displayed class and composure throughout. Under Gian Piero Gasperini, who lifted the Europa League with Atalanta last year, they could prove difficult to stop in this competition.
Rangers, under new head coach Danny Rohl, cannot be judged solely on this result. Yet early in his tenure, he cannot allow these European defeats to undermine his efforts to rebuild the team’s domestic challenge.
Conceding three goals in Bergen and two at Ibrox in consecutive Europa League matches has highlighted the task ahead. Rangers still face trips to Ferencvaros and Porto, and home games against Ludogorets and Braga.
Still without a point in this season’s European campaign, their continental ambitions may need to take a back seat to more immediate Premiership priorities.
