Much of the pre-match discussion centred on Mohamed Salah’s omission from the squad after he claimed the club had “thrown him under the bus” and suggested his relationship with Arne Slot had collapsed. With the forward remaining on Merseyside, it fell to Szoboszlai to take on the responsibility from the spot after a VAR review showed Alessandro Bastoni pulling the shirt of Florian Wirtz in the area.
Inter keeper Yann Sommer guessed correctly, but the force of Szoboszlai’s strike took it beyond him. Liverpool held firm to claim three valuable points after a turbulent spell at the club.
Slot’s side had lost nine of their previous 12 matches, but this result extends their unbeaten run to four. Liverpool now have 12 points from their six league-phase fixtures and this victory lifts them into the top eight, securing automatic passage to the last 16.
Inter slipped to fifth on the same points total as they suffered their first home defeat in the competition since September 2022, when Bayern Munich left the San Siro with a win.
It was a close game
Liverpool thought they had gone ahead in the 32nd minute when Ibrahima Konate headed in from a corner, but after a lengthy VAR check the referee Felix Zwayer ruled the goal out as the ball had struck the arm of Hugo Ekitike before reaching Konate.
Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai and Ekitike all tested Sommer in an opening half in which Inter lost Piotr Zielinski and Yann Aurel Bisseck to injury.
The disallowed goal appeared to galvanise the hosts. Nicolo Barella went close with a free-kick that drifted narrowly wide and Lautaro Martinez saw a header turned away by Alisson Becker.
Late drama
The match seemed destined to finish goalless, which would have been a first under Slot, but Wirtz, introduced in the 68th minute for Alexander Isak, made the most of Bastoni’s tug. Szoboszlai’s composed finish, his second goal in as many games, ensured Liverpool once again departed the San Siro with a win, maintaining a perfect run there stretching back four years.
