Arsenal asserted control from the outset and moved ahead in the 22nd minute, Jurrien Timber rising to meet Bukayo Saka's corner for the side's tenth goal from such a set piece this season, more than any other team across Europe's major leagues.

Bayern settled after falling behind and levelled 10 minutes later, Joshua Kimmich sweeping a crossfield pass to Serge Gnabry, who squared the ball for 17-year-old Lennart Karl to finish from close range against his former club.

It was the first goal Arsenal had conceded in the competition this season, though it did little to slow their progress as they marched to a fifth straight win.

England winger Madueke restored the lead, guiding in substitute Riccardo Calafiori's fierce low cross, before the Gunners sealed the result. North London derby matchwinner Eberechi Eze lifted a clever pass over the back line for Gabriel Martinelli, who skipped around Manuel Neuer, stranded off his line, to condemn Bayern to their first defeat of the campaign.

This was Bayern Munich's first defeat since the Club World Cup. Another statement win and performance from Arsenal then.

Jamie, an Arsenal supporter, said: “Two substitutes coming on to score shows the depth Arteta has at his disposal this season. It is remarkable.”

Lewis W, a Chelsea fan watching as a neutral, added: “I am pleased for Madueke. I never wanted him sold and he took some stick from Arsenal fans when he made the move. This has been a high-quality match and Arsenal have played well. I am looking forward to Sunday’s game, which will be a tough one for Chelsea.”
