The visitors shocked the champions with a swift double inside 17 minutes. Yuito Suzuki struck from close range before Johan Manzambi rose to nod in Jan Niklas Beste's corner. Bayern, unbeaten in the league since March, recovered with authority and were level by the break.

Lennart Karl, still in his teens, steered in from an Olise pass on 22 minutes and then returned the favour in first half stoppage time, squaring for the French winger to lash home. Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was left regretting his attempt to keep it out.

Bayern asserted themselves after the interval

Dayot Upamecano powered in a header from an Olise corner to give them the lead for the first time. Harry Kane added his 14th league goal of the season on the hour and Olise logged a third assist with a precise through ball that allowed Nicolas Jackson to finish first time on 78 minutes.

Best reaction

After the match, Vincent Kompany told Bayern Munich’s club media outlets: “Two players do something special in a difficult phase and we get out of this situation. Then our momentum returns. It’s definitely down to quality, there’s no other way to describe it.”

Harry Kane added: “We didn’t do well in the first 20 minutes, but then we showed character. The lead after half-time helped us of course. We came out with a lot more energy in the second half. “
