Five goals arrived in a breathless first half and the drama continued after the interval as the holders stretched into a three-goal lead. Bayern, already crowned Bundesliga champions and chasing a Treble, reduced the deficit to one to leave the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg in Munich.
With the competition’s two most prolific sides meeting, it felt appropriate that a lively crowd witnessed such a high-quality, attack-minded contest.
A closer analysis of what happened
Having fallen behind to Harry Kane’s penalty after Luis Diaz was fouled by William Pacho, PSG responded with authority. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cut in from the left and guided a fine effort into the far corner before Joao Neves headed the hosts in front.
Bayern replied through a moment of individual brilliance from Michael Olise, who weaved past defenders before driving beyond Matvey Safonov.
The sides looked set to go in level, but PSG were awarded a contentious penalty deep into stoppage time when Alphonso Davies was judged to have handled. Referee Sandro Scharer consulted the monitor before pointing to the spot, and Ousmane Dembele converted with composure.
Bayern emerged after the break intent on restoring parity but were exposed at times as PSG took control. Kvaratskhelia added another from Achraf Hakimi’s delivery, and Dembele struck again at the near post to open up a three-goal cushion.
A flicked finish from Dayot Upamecano briefly lifted the visitors, and Diaz’s precise effort from Kane’s incisive pass ensured the tie remains alive ahead of the return leg on Wednesday, 6 May.
The winners will meet either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid in the final in Budapest.
