Eddie Howe’s side began the final day of the Premier League campaign in fourth, within reach of a return to Europe’s top table. But a nervy, disjointed display left them vulnerable, and Everton took full advantage.

Revitalised under David Moyes, the visitors were the more organised side throughout and took a deserved lead when Carlos Alcaraz headed home midway through the second half.

Tension gripped the home crowd as their side laboured, but relief swept around the ground when word spread that Manchester United were leading Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Confirmation of that result was met with jubilation, with Newcastle ultimately securing fifth place on goal difference, enough to clinch a Champions League berth thanks to the Premier League’s expanded allocation.

It marks a fitting end to a breakthrough season for the Magpies, who lifted their first domestic trophy in 70 years with a Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool at Wembley, their first piece of silverware since 1969.

An interesting summer awaits for the club as they look to compete on football fronts and carry on this period of success.

Where next for the Moyes revival

Everton confirmed their revival under Moyes with a composed, highly professional performance that almost ended Newcastle's hopes of Champions League football next season while offering the Toffees real hope and optimism for next term.

They were 16th in the Premier League, one point clear of the relegation zone, with only three wins from 19 games when Moyes succeeded Sean Dyche in January for his second spell in charge.

In the end Everton finished comfortably in 13th, and this performance full of threat and organisation bore all the Moyes trademarks. Next season, they'll he hoping to build on this and maybe challenge for the European places.
