News: Is Jurgen Klopp retiring?
A successful managerial career is reportedly coming to an end
Former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has ruled out the possibility of becoming the England manager and hinted at potentially retiring from management altogether.
The German coach departed from Liverpool at the end of last season after nine successful years, during which he won all major trophies and ended the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title.
Klopp has been linked to the England manager’s position following Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down after Euro 2024. However, the 57-year-old stated he has not received any offers and reiterated his intention to take a break from football.
Further reports suggest that Klopp wishes to return to work after his break, though it may not be in a managerial role.
The video below displays the announcement that followed Klopp's announcement that he was leaving Liverpool. At the time, it was believed that he would carry on as a manager. However, this appears that it might no longer be the case.
A closer look at his managerial career
Upon retiring as a player at Mainz in 2001, Jürgen Klopp took over as the club's manager and led them to Bundesliga promotion in 2004. Despite relegation in the 2006–07 season and being unable to secure promotion again, Klopp resigned in 2008 as the club's longest-serving manager.
He then moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he guided the team to the Bundesliga title in the 2010–11 season and won Dortmund's first-ever domestic double in a record-breaking season. Klopp also took Dortmund to the runner-up position in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League before departing in 2015, again as the club's longest-serving manager.
Klopp was appointed manager of Liverpool in 2015. He led the team to UEFA Champions League finals in 2018 and 2022, winning the trophy in 2019, securing his first and Liverpool's sixth title in the competition. His team finished second in the 2018–19 Premier League with 97 points, the third-highest total in the history of the English top division and the most ever by a team that didn't win the title.
The following season, Klopp won the UEFA Super Cup and Liverpool's first FIFA Club World Cup, before delivering Liverpool's first Premier League title, amassing a club record 99 points and breaking several top-flight records. These achievements earned him back-to-back FIFA Coach of the Year awards in 2019 and 2020. Klopp also achieved a cup double of the EFL Cup and FA Cup in 2022, as well as another EFL Cup in 2024.
