News: Southgate to leave position as England manager

There has been a dramatic announcement in the aftermath of the Euro 2024 final

England manager Gareth Southgate has stepped down just two days after the team's defeat by Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.

The Three Lions were narrowly beaten 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday, marking their second consecutive Euros final loss, following a penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley three years ago.

Southgate, aged 53, has overseen 102 matches during his eight-year tenure. His contract was due to end later this year.

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham has indicated that the search for Southgate’s replacement has already begun, and the FA aim to complete the process quickly.

Southgate resigns as England boss

Southgate rekindled England fans' belief in their national side

Aside from Sir Alf Ramsey, who led England to World Cup victory in 1966, Southgate is the only manager to have guided the men's team to a major tournament final.

He managed England in four major tournaments, reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and the quarter-finals in 2022.

Before Southgate took charge in 2016, England had won just seven knockout games in 25 tournaments since 1966. Under his leadership, they won nine such matches.

Southgate succeeded Sam Allardyce after his brief stint, achieving 61 wins, 24 draws, and 17 losses in his 102 games as manager.

A former defender with 57 caps for England between 1995 and 2004, Southgate has been part of the national setup since 2013, having managed the under-21s for three years before taking on the senior role.

His only club management experience was with Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009. It will be interesting to see if he returns to club football and when he will start looking for any kind of new role or opportunity.

The best reaction

Jamie, a West Ham fan, told us: "Gareth Southgate is a good man. He cares a lot about the players. Quite simply, the pride and patriotism for his country are qualities people feel are ebbing from society. He is a very decent man in what can be a very brutal profession at times."

William, a Liverpool fan, added: "Southgate deserves more respect, especially when comparing pre-Southgate England with the current state. I hope he remains with the FA in a developmental role."

On his Instagram story, Declan Rice said: "Thank you gaffer. It's been a privilege to play for England under your guidance. Memories that will stay with me forever. All the best in your next adventure."
