Nottingham Forest: 23/24 Season Review

This was the 158th season in their history and the second consecutive season in the Premier League. The club also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

On 15 January 2024, the Premier League charged Nottingham Forest with breaching the league's profit and sustainability rules. By 18 March, Forest were found guilty and handed a four-point deduction. The club appealed the decision on 26 March, but on 7 May, it was announced that their appeal had failed, and the four-point deduction was upheld.

Despite this setback, Forest managed to secure their Premier League status on the final day of the season with a 2–1 victory away at Burnley. They finished the season with 32 points, breaking the previous record for the lowest points tally of any team to survive in the Premier League, which was set by West Bromwich Albion in the 2004–05 season with 34 points.

Match reports and stories from throughout the season

In August, Forest found themselves 2-0 up against Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, United United managed a remarkable comeback after being two goals behind to secure an exciting victory.

In September, they were probably frustrated that they didn't pick up a point against Manchester City. City had to dig in to protect an early 2-0 lead and succeeded in keeping Forest at arm's length despite Rodri being sent off early in the match. Reaction as City forced to hold on against Forest

In December, there was a huge development as they sacked iconic manager Steve Cooper. The announcement that Cooper had been dismissed came after Forest lost five of their past six games. Cooper departed The City Ground having played an integral part in Forest’s return to the Premier League.

A few months later, Forest were penalised with a deduction of four points for violating the Premier League's profit and sustainability regulations.  An independent commission discovered that the club's losses for the period until 2022-23 exceeded the £61m threshold by £34.5m. As a result, Forest went into the relegation zone where they temporarily dropped below Luton Town.

At the start of May, safety from relegation was almost secured after a hard-fought win over Sheffield United. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored two goals and Ryan Yates added another to secure what proved to be a vital three points.
