Premier League: Stones scores controversial winner

Image
Wolves 1 - 2 Manchester City The Premier League champions secured their sixth win in eight games this season with a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. Author - Sean M The match ended in controversy when John Stones scored a dramatic header in the 95th minute from Phil Foden’s corner. Initially, the goal was disallowed for offside, but after a VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh reversed the decision, allowing the goal to stand, much to Wolves' frustration. Earlier in the match, Josko Gvardiol equalised for the hosts after Jorgen Strand Larsen had given Wolves the lead. Unfortunately for Wolves, they remain winless this season and currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table. What happened then? In the final seconds of stoppage time, Foden delivered a corner kick that Stones headed powerfully into the net.  However, as the Manchester City players celebrated, the linesman raised his flag to signal an offside, noting that Bernardo Silva was standing in fro

Community Shield: City win on penalties

Image
Manchester United 1 - 1 Manchester City Manchester City won 7-6 on penalties Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final loss to Manchester United as Pep Guardiola's team emerged victorious in a penalty shootout after the Community Shield ended in a draw at Wembley. Bernardo Silva equalised for City in the dying moments of the match, but his fortunes quickly turned as his penalty was saved by Andre Onana, giving United the upper hand.  However, Ederson kept City in the game by stopping Jadon Sancho’s effort. Later, experienced defender Jonny Evans sent his shot over the bar. Manuel Akanji then stepped up to secure City's first win in this competition since 2019, in front of a crowd of 78,416. It had earlier seemed Alejandro Garnacho had sealed the victory for United with a composed finish into the bottom corner, nine minutes from time, after a well-orchestrated move led by captain Bruno Fernandes. Euro 2024: Portugal triumph over Slovenia on penalties

Image
Portugal 0 - 0 Slovenia Portugal won 3-0 on penalties Cristiano Ronaldo's tears turned to joy as Portugal triumphed over Slovenia on penalties to secure a Euro 2024 quarter-final spot against France, despite the 39-year-old missing a crucial penalty in extra time. Ronaldo, who was in tears after Jan Oblak's brilliant save of his penalty in the 105th minute, was consoled by his teammates. Following a gruelling goalless draw, he successfully converted Portugal's first effort in the shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa's saves from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic were instrumental in the victory. Costa's heroics paved the way for Bernardo Silva to score the winning penalty after Bruno Fernandes had also found the net. This came after a similarly crucial save from Benjamin Sesko deep into extra time, as Slovenia came heartbreakingly close to a historic upset. Viva Ronaldo As always, Ronaldo took centre stage in this unforgettable match, though his wai

Euro 2024: Portugal guarantee top spot

Image
Turkey 0-3 Portugal Portugal secured their spot in the last 16 as group winners at Euro 2024 with a straightforward victory over Turkey in Dortmund. Manchester City's Bernardo Silva opened the scoring midway through the first half, deftly placing the ball past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after Nuno Mendes' cross from the left was deflected into his path. A disastrous own goal doubled Portugal's lead when defender Samet Akaydin, without looking up, passed the ball back to Bayindir, who was unable to stop it from rolling into his own net. This blunder dampened the spirits of the enthusiastic Turkish supporters, who had arrived at the stadium in droves from the city centre, proudly waving their flags. Portugal's fans, though less in number, were just as spirited and celebrated as their team played with confidence and style. The victory was sealed when Cristiano Ronaldo selflessly set up Bruno Fernandes for a simple tap-in to make it 3-0 before the hour mark. The 2016 c

Raheem Sterling's recent good run carried on as he turned home Kyle Walker's far post touch to equalise after 63 minutes. Then Gabriel Jesus was the beneficiary of a superb pass from Bernardo Silva to beat Kaylor Navas from close range.  All the reaction Pep Guardiola said: "Of course, PSG, what a team, what players, what could I say. Performance is quite similar to Paris a month ago. Today we created more chances in the first half. We played well and always we had the sense that they could run in behind." A lot of fans and pundits were saying that City were lacking quality in the final third. However, the game ended in controversy as referee Simon Hooper called a foul on Erling Haaland, who had seemingly overcome a tackle and set up Grealish. Haaland's frustration lingered beyond the final whistle, with an animated response to something from the Tottenham bench as he stormed down the tunnel. Both teams got something out of this entertaining clash, with Tottenham initially taking the lead through Son Heung-min, only for their skipper to inadvertently redirect a cross into their own net shortly after.
