Community Shield: City win on penalties

Manchester United 1 - 1 Manchester City

Manchester City won 7-6 on penalties

Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final loss to Manchester United as Pep Guardiola's team emerged victorious in a penalty shootout after the Community Shield ended in a draw at Wembley.

Bernardo Silva equalised for City in the dying moments of the match, but his fortunes quickly turned as his penalty was saved by Andre Onana, giving United the upper hand.

However, Ederson kept City in the game by stopping Jadon Sancho’s effort. Later, experienced defender Jonny Evans sent his shot over the bar. Manuel Akanji then stepped up to secure City's first win in this competition since 2019, in front of a crowd of 78,416.

It had earlier seemed Alejandro Garnacho had sealed the victory for United with a composed finish into the bottom corner, nine minutes from time, after a well-orchestrated move led by captain Bruno Fernandes.

Silva’s initial response to this setback was to vent his frustration by barging into Garnacho, earning himself a yellow card. But moments later, the Portuguese midfielder made amends with a much more impactful contribution.

As young Norwegian talent Oscar Bobb created space near the byline, Silva out maneuvered makeshift left-back Facundo Pellistri at the far post. Despite not being the tallest on the pitch, Silva timed his jump perfectly to head home the equaliser, bringing City back into the contest.

A decent outing for both sides

Despite the disappointing ending to the match, Erik Ten Hag would have been happy with many aspects of Manchester United's performance. They created many chances in the second half and probably deserved the win. Even though he missed a couple of chances, Marcus Rashford also impressed and was a threat going forward.

When he came on, Garnacho also gave United some impetus and took his goal well. With more signings expected over the next week, there's plenty for Manchester United fans to look forward to.

United fans created a great atmosphere before the match.

City's lineup featured winger Oscar Bobb, along with 21-year-old James McAtee, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, and the relatively inexperienced 19-year-old Nico O'Reilly.

Brazilian winger Savinho, just 20 years old and a recent arrival at City last month, also made a strong impression with a lively 30-minute appearance off the bench

Norwegian midfielder Oscar Bobb developed his skills in City's academy and featured in 26 senior matches across all competitions last season, including two starts in the Premier League. He is expected to be more involved this season.
