The former England international, 43, was appointed in October 2022, taking on his first permanent managerial role. He led Boro to the Championship play-offs in his debut season, but the club failed to reach the top six in the following two campaigns.

Carrick’s coaching staff, including Jonathan Woodgate and his brother Graeme Carrick, have also left the Riverside Stadium.

Boro remained in contention for a play-off spot for much of the 2024–25 campaign but faltered in the closing stages, managing just one win from their final six matches. A final-day defeat at Coventry consigned them to a 10th-place finish.

Carrick’s departure means that 17 of last season’s 24 Championship clubs have changed manager since the start of the campaign.

Carrick failed to build on a successful start to his managerial career

Riverside Stadium

He started his coaching career with Manchester United, with whom he won five Premier League titles in his playing days, after retiring back in 2018

He had a spell in caretaker charge of the team in November 2021 after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United managed a Champions League win over Villarreal and Premier League win over Arsenal in this time. He then left the when Ralf Rangnick was appointed in the December of that year.

Middlesbrough turned to him in October the following year after a terrible  start to the season saw them dismiss Chris Wilder with the club in the relegation zone and serious threats of a drop into League One.

He immediately turned their fortunes and led them to 4th place and a spot in the play-offs.

The following season, they fell just short of another Premier League push as they finished eighth, four points off sixth.

Last season was a similar story.  They headed into the final part of the season in the play-off spots but came up short. That has probably led the Middlesbrough board go making this decision.
