English football is set to trial measures aimed at eradicating the goalkeeper tactical timeout this season.

The Football Association, Premier League, English Football League, National League and Women’s Super League have agreed to the proposal, which is subject to approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

Earlier this year, IFAB decided against changing the laws of the game and instead invited leagues to volunteer for trials. Pro Ref, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, has since held discussions with the leagues over how best to address the issue.

The agreed solution will require a team to remove an outfield player from the pitch whenever its goalkeeper receives treatment.

If a referee signals for a physio to enter the field to treat a goalkeeper, the coach will have 10 seconds to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for one minute. The decision must be communicated to the fourth official.

If no player is nominated within those 10 seconds, the captain will be required to leave the field instead.
