Barcelona: 23/24 Season Review

 Let's explore Barcelona's 2023/2024 campaign

In addition to La Liga, Barca also took part in the Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España, and UEFA Champions League.

Barca 23/24 season

Throughout the season, Barcelona played their home matches at the Estadi Olímpic due to the redevelopment of the Nou Camp.

This season was notable as the first without captain Sergio Busquets, who departed the club after 18 years (including 15 years in the first team since the 2007–08 season) as a free agent in the summer. It was also the first full season without Gerard Piqué, who retired before the winter World Cup, and the first since 2011–12 without left-back Jordi Alba, who mutually agreed to terminate his contract a year early.

Elsewhere, Barcelona finished as runners-up in the Supercopa de España and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Athletic Bilbao, losing in extra time. In the league, they were unable to defend last season's title, ending the season in second place, with the consolation of qualifying for next season's Supercopa de España.

They officially lost the title after a 4-2 defeat v Girona. It was a performance that probably summed up all the negative aspects of their campaign.

A closer look at Barcelona in Europe

The season had its highs and lows, with the team finishing as Group H winners in the Champions League, advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in three years after failing to do so in the previous two seasons.

In the knockout stage, they defeated Napoli 4–2 on aggregate in the round of 16. However, their Champions League run ended in the quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain. A red card for Ronald Araújo in the second leg contributed to their defeat, despite winning the first leg.

Another Managerial Change

This was Xavi's third and final season as head coach, with Hansi Flick set to take over next season. Statistically, the team scored 110 goals across all competitions, with Robert Lewandowski being the top scorer with 26 goals.

Lewandowski shines

Robert Lewandowski scored some fantastic goals during the season. The video above that was uploaded to the LaLiga YouTube account contains the best of them.
