Transfer News: Varane to leave United at the end of the season

There has already been an announcement about a Manchester United player's future

It has been announced that Manchester United defender Raphael Varane will leave the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Varane to leave Man United

Varane joined from Real Madrid in July 2021 for an initial fee of about £34m and has made 93 appearances for The Red Devils.

The former France international helped United win the Carabao Cup in 2023 when manager Erik ten Hag's side beat Newcastle United 2-0. If he regains fitness, Varane still has the chance to win another trophy as United have a final to play in this season, despite a poor season for the club as a whole.

Varane won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies in his time at Real Madrid before joining United under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Did Varane deliver for Manchester United?

This was the announcement that the club put out when Varane was signed in 2021. The footage is from the Manchester United YouTube account.

Liam, a Manchester United Season Ticket holder, spoke about the impact of the French defender. He said: "Three years ago, Varane was announced to United fans amidst much excitement. This announcement took place before a match against Leeds United, which Manchester United won 5-1.

"That summer also saw the arrival of Jadon Sancho and the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. This signalled United's intention to compete at the highest level. However, Varane, like the rest of the team, fell short of expectations.

"While he is undoubtedly a talented player, you'd have to argue that he struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. He has started less than 60 Premier League games over three seasons. Although his partnership with Lisandro Martinez was crucial in United's third-place finish last season, injuries to both players disrupted the team's rhythm and contributed to a decline in form."

Scott, another United fan, told us: "He was a great player for us when fit. However, he wasn't fit enough. It was reported that United had already decided not to trigger the option of a year's extension in Varane's contract. In reality, he probably didn't want to stay on at the club. I actually think he'd be great going back to France. The standard of football would suit his obvious talent.

"While United will get no fee, his exit does create some wiggle room for the club financially. In all likelihood, his replacement will not be a serial Champions League winner from one of the world's biggest clubs, so surely, the replacement salary will not be as high."
