Burnley: 2023/2024 Season Review
We are going to explore Burnley's 2023/2024 season.
This was the 142nd season in the history of Burnley Football Club and their first season back in the Premier League since the 2021–22 campaign, following promotion from the EFL Championship in the previous season.
They also participated in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
After losing 2–1 at home to West Ham United on 25 November 2023, Burnley became the second team in English league history (after Newport County in 1970–71) to lose their first seven home matches of the season. The streak was then ended the following game when they beat Sheffield United 5–0.
On 11 May 2024, they were officially relegated from the Premier League following a 2–1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur. They finished the season in 19th position.
Their form in the cup competitions wasn't much better. They only made it to the 4th round of the EFL Cup and couldn't make it past their first hurdle in the FA Cup.
A look at some of the key moments from their season
They started the season with a defeat against Manchester City. After the match, Burnley fan Dara O'Shea posted on Twitter: "Not the result we wanted to start the season with but many positives to take from it. Really proud to have made my Burnley debut & looking forward to more nights at Turf Moor."
A 3-0 defeat against Brentford in October was the bigger indication of where this season was going to end up. This was a match they needed to perform in. The players failed to deliver.
In February, they suffered a heavy defeat against Arsenal. At the time of this thrashing, Andrew Graves, a Burnley fan, told us: "I just want this to be over now, Get me back to The Championship as soon as possible. At least we'll win some matches!"
They did have the occasional result. In April, they drew against Manchester United. Despite this more positive performance, Tony a Burnley Season Ticket holder, displayed his annoyance with his side's lack of consistency. He said: "That was a decent performance. However, I want to know why this effort hasn't been on display in other matches. Why can't we play like that every week? Do we only turn up when there's a big crowd on? I almost feel a bit cheated. For all the PR, I have been annoyed with Kompany this season. I'm not sure he'll be the man to take us back up if we get relegated."
That 1-1 draw against United only delayed the inevitable. .Against Spurs on May 14th, relegation was finally confirmed. In this match, they took a surprise lead in the first half through Jacob Bruun Larsen’s well-taken strike. A Tottenham fightback thanks to goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven ended their resistance.
A last-day defeat at home to Nottingham Forest probably summed up their season.
