City were brought back down to earth by a masterclass from Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium.

The 2023 Champions League winners, watched by former manager Pep Guardiola on his return to the club, were playing their first home match since being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.

Amid an atmosphere of defiance among City's supporters, PSG stunned Enzo Maresca's side by racing into a three-goal lead before half-time.

Desire Doue opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a low shot past City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, before delivering a perfect cross for Ousmane Dembele to head home the second two minutes later.

PSG were cutting City apart, with Vitinha adding a third after 32 minutes with a clinical finish following superb link-up play between Maghnes Akliouche and Warren Zaire-Emery.

Maresca made three substitutions at half-time

City emerged as a transformed side after the break, creating a succession of chances before Erling Haaland pulled a goal back eight minutes into the second half with a flicked header from Iliman Ndiaye's cross.

City's hopes of a comeback suffered a setback after 62 minutes when Donnarumma initially saved Akliouche's shot, only for the ball to drop behind him and cross the line.

City refused to give up, with Haaland scoring his second before seeing another effort miraculously kept out by PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. The final act of drama came late on when Donnarumma saved Ferran Torres' penalty.
