Premier League: City start season with a win

Burnley 0 - 3 Manchester City

It wasn't a great return to the Premier League for Burnley

Erling Haaland returned to his usual form with an impressive demonstration of his scoring abilities as Manchester City began their defence of the Premier League title by securing a comfortable win against Burnley.

The exceptional goal-scoring talent, who scored 52 goals in the previous season during City's triumphant campaign in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, wasted no time in the new season.

Within just 185 seconds, he found the back of the net, dealing a blow that the newly promoted Burnley side couldn't recover from.

Haaland capitalized on an opportunity inside the penalty area when Rodri directed Kevin de Bruyne's cross downwards. Later, at the 36th minute mark, Haaland elegantly curved a left-footed shot into the top corner of the net, leaving Burnley's goalkeeper James Trafford with no chance and essentially sealing the outcome of the match.

Despite being cheered on by their passionate home crowd, Burnley never surrendered, but as the match progressed, Manchester City's dominance became even more evident. Rodri added a third goal with 15 minutes remaining, capitalizing on a defensive error from the home team following a free-kick.

Manchester City's victory was comprehensive, although their night was slightly tarnished by yet another injury setback for Kevin de Bruyne, who had to leave the field after just 23 minutes. He was replaced by the newly acquired Mateo Kovacic.

In injury time, Burnley's Anass Zaroury was shown a red card after a VAR review for a reckless challenge on Kyle Walker, further adding to Burnley's woes.

Best social media reaction

This is what Burnley's official Twitter account posted after the match.

Dara O'Shea posted on the same platform: "Not the result we wanted to start the season with but many positives to take from it. Really proud to have made my Burnley debut & looking forward to more nights at Turf Moor."

The Burnley manager told the media and the club's official Twitter account: "It's only going to get better, that's something that really excites me."

This was the reaction from the winning side.
