Good football articles: Where do you start? 1/2

Football is the most popular sport across the continent.

This has resulted in thousands (possibly millions) of articles being published each year, all of which combined analyse every inch of the beautiful game.

The disadvantage of this is if you want to read some insightful analysis, it's hard to know where to start. We're here to help. Let's explore some of the best football blogs and articles published in recent months.

From Media Referee - Can Wayne Rooney’s Derby County build a successful future?

This interesting article from Media Referee looks at the future of Derby County. After suffering a points deduction, many experts said they were certainties to get relegated and face a grim future. However, this article points out that Derby does have a lot going for them.

Icons: Wayne Rooney

Since the article was published, Derby have gone on a great run leading to some changing their predictions. Is the great escape on?

From BBC Sport - Afcon 2021: Everything you need to know about the tournament in Cameroon

Several players currently plying their trade will be competing in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. It is the first international tournament of 2022 and many of the players involved will be eager to impress with a World Cup now less than a year away.

This interesting article from the BBC looks at the contenders for the competition. They say it's hard to look past Algeria who have Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez, a player currently in great form. Senegal and Egypt are also among the challengers.

From Off The Post - Will Manchester United recapture former glories next season?

Manchester United are one of the most talked-about sports teams in the world. However they are playing, United are usually headline news. This article from Off The Post looked at whether they could recapture former glories this season. It speaks about Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood being key to their chances.

The article was published before Cristiano Ronaldo signed for the club and Daniel James was sold to Leeds. This perhaps shows how quickly things move in football. As we all know, their form this season has been awful at times, and they look miles away from recapturing former glories.

From The Guardian - Lost the love for the game

The Guardian's online channel is often praised for its football coverage, and this is another interesting article. It focuses on the former Brighton midfielder Davy Pröpper who has announced his retirement at the age of only 30. One of the reasons for his retirement was that he no longer felt comfortable in the world of football. It gives an interesting insight into a fairly well-known player that has played for several clubs.

Once you have read this, it is worth exploring what else has been said around this story. Many people, including the player himself, have offered a comment. In a statement on PSV’s website, Pröpper said: “I made the final decision to call time on my playing career before Christmas and it feels like a relief. That’s why I know I’ve made the right choice."
