Carabao Cup: Preston North End 0 - 2 Liverpool

Goals from Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi secured Liverpool's place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

This came at the expense of a resolute Preston North End side at Deepdale. You can watch Liverpool conquer the Championship side in the video below.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp named an entirely different Liverpool side to the one which thrashed Manchester United 5-0 on Sunday. Despite dominating possession for long periods of the match, it was Preston who fashioned the best opportunities in the first 45 minutes.

Klopp then brought on Conor Bradley and pushed Williams forward and the change had the desired impact on Liverpool and the performance. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's drive from the edge of the box. This was the closest the subdued they had gone before Minamino's opener.

Liverpool were ultimately able to see out the tie in comfort when Origi flicked home from close range with a wonderful improvised finish after being set up by Williams as the Klopp's booked their place in the quarter-final draw.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told the media: "We didn't play well, that's how it is. We started quite OK, but then we lost the structure completely and that was the problem. We were too lively, too desperate to get the ball.

"As a team we can play better, but individually I saw a few really nice performances. It's all about getting through to the next round, that's what we did. That it [would be] difficult with 11 changes, that was clear."

Preston reaction

Preston would have been pleased with their performance at times but disappointed against a weakened Liverpool side. They had only 9 shots during the 90 minutes with only 4 being on target. This is one of the tweets that they posted after the match.

Their manager added: "I’m disappointed but I just want to say our fans tonight were magnificent. Even Jurgen Klopp said to me what an impressive stadium it was.”
