It's very close at the top of League One

Image
It's shaping up to be a dramatic fight for promotion from League One. Let's explore some of the key moments from matches on December 3rd. Author - Mark Lee Wrexham 1 - 0 Barnsley The match started brightly, with Ryan Barnett testing Barnsley goalkeeper Ben Killip early on, his left-footed strike forcing a smart save in the ninth minute. Wrexham faced an early setback when goalkeeper Callum Burton was forced off with an injury midway through the first half, replaced by Mark Howard. Wrexham were close to breaking the deadlock before half-time, as Matty James’ half-volley was well stopped by Killip. The second half unfolded much like the first, with neither side dominating the game. Max Cleworth, already with five goals this season, nearly added another, while Killip was kept busy again, denying Elliot Lee’s well-struck effort from the edge of the box. Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher were introduced as substitutes with over 20 minutes to play, replacing Lee and Ollie Palmer. H...

Christmas drama at Stamford Bridge back in 2007

December 2007: Chelsea 4 - 4 Aston Villa Seventeen years ago, Gareth Barry's late penalty rescued a dramatic draw for Aston Villa in what was a truly remarkable match. Author - Peter Grainger What happened in the match? The tone for a dramatic match was set from the outset as Chelsea made a sloppy start and early mistakes by full-backs Ashley Cole and Paulo Ferreira saw Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor drag efforts narrowly wide. Shaun Maloney eventually fired Villa into the lead with a volley before Petr Cech’s blunder gifted him a second. However, Zat Knight’s red card swung the momentum, allowing Andriy Shevchenko to convert a penalty. Shevchenko then powered in an equaliser, and Alex smashed Chelsea into the lead. But Villa fought back, with Martin Laursen levelling the score before Ricardo Carvalho was sent off for a reckless challenge. Michael Ballack’s superb free-kick looked to have sealed the win for Chelsea, but Gareth Barry kept his cool to make it 4-4 after Ashl...

Icons: Sir Bobby Charlton

Image
Everyone at European Super Football was saddened yesterday by the passing of the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton.  This article will explore his fantastic career. A brief summary Sir Bobby spent most of his club career at Manchester United, scoring 249 goals. It was only in 2017 that Wayne Rooney beat him as United's most prolific goalscorer. In terms of trophies, he won the First Division on three occasions and the Fa Cup in 1963. His crowning glory came in 1968 when he scored twice in their European Cup Final win against Benfica. His last game for United was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 28 April 1973. Before the game, the BBC cameras for Match of the Day captured the Chelsea chairman handing him a commemorative cigarette case. Coincidentally, this day also marked his brother Jackie's last appearance for Leeds. The impact of Munich After bursting onto the scene at Manchester United in the 1950s, tragedy struck. The Munich Air Crash of 1958 also had a profound impac...

Premier League: West Ham United 1-2 Brentford

Image
Brentford manager Thomas Frank says his team's injury-time win at West Ham was a "massive" result for the club. Yoane Wissa scored an injury time winner as Brentford moved up to seventh in the table with a dramatic victory against West Ham United. Let's have a look at the best reaction The Brentford manager spoke with the media after the match and believes that his time can do even better: "If we can do that every week, it would be nice. Fantastic feeling away from home, a solid performance. In the second half, West Ham were better." David Moyes added:"It was a blow, we didn’t deserve that. I think Brentford will make it hard for lots of teams. In the second half, we dominated and in the first half, we missed opportunities." What stat? Should West Ham be concerned about some of their recent form and results? They have now lost four of their past seven home league matches (won two, drawn one), as many as they lost in their previous twenty matches ...

Is this is a good move for everyone concerned? Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt had been linked with a return to his former club Wigan Athletic but in the end, he made the temporary move to Sunderland. The 20-year-old will remain with the Black Cats until the end of the season after making 15 Premier League appearances so far this campaign. Gelhardt becomes the Wearside club's third signing of the January window after Pierre Ekwah and Isaac Lihadji. The England Under-20 international has scored two goals in 41 first-team appearances for Leeds and joins a Sunderland side who lie in ninth place in the Championship, a point outside the play-offs. All the best reaction Manager Tony Mowbray told the Sunderland website: "It is no secret that Joe had plenty of options on the table this month, so it is a testament to the club and its staff that he felt Sunderland was the best move for him. He has made an impact at Premier League level throughout the past 18 months, and he i...
