Spurs second-half display sinks Villa

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 1 Aston Villa Dominic Solanke bagged a brace as Tottenham staged a comeback to beat Aston Villa in the Premier League. Author - Greg S The Ā£65m summer signing doubled his seasonā€™s league goal tally with two goals in just four minutes of the second half, lifting Ange Postecoglou's side up to seventh in the table. Solanke gave Spurs the lead with a clever finish, lifting the ball over the onrushing Emiliano Martinez from a pinpoint pass by Dejan Kulusevski. Minutes later, Richarlison found Solanke in the box, who calmly slotted it home to put Villa's late resurgence beyond reach. A closer look at what happened at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Villa had initially taken the lead 32 minutes in, as Morgan Rogers capitalised on Spurs' inability to clear Lucas Digneā€™s in-swinging corner, netting from their first shot on target. Aston Villa, who had been denied an opener just two minutes prior when Amadou Onanaā€™s header struck the post, were well-organised ...

UEL: Spurs start Europa League campaign with a win

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 0 Qarabag Tottenham kicked off their Europa League campaign with an impressive win against Qarabag, despite being reduced to 10 men just seven minutes into the match. This was great preparation as Spurs will face an important few weeks in different competitions. For this match, there was a 35-minute delay to the start due to various travel disruptions across London. A closer look at what happened Spurs suffered an early setback when defender Radu Dragusin was sent off for a last-man foul on Juninho, who was through on goal. Nevertheless, five minutes later Brennan Johnson found the net, capitalising on Qarabag's sloppy attempt to play out from the back. Dominic Solanke set up the 23-year-old, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, marking his third goal in as many games. Tottenham doubled their lead in the 52nd minute through Pape Sarr, who controlled a loose ball at the far post before firing it home. Qarabag were awarded a penalty just three...

Wolves continue revival under new boss

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 2 Wolves Jorgen Strand Larsenā€™s late equaliser salvaged a point for Wolves in a chaotic Premier League draw with Tottenham, continuing VĆtor Pereiraā€™s strong start as Wolves manager. Author - Greg S Wolves took an early lead when an unmarked Hwang Hee-chan calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, capitalising on a lapse in the Spurs defence at a free-kick. Spurs responded swiftly, with Rodrigo Bentancur nodding in a powerful close-range header from Pedro Porroā€™s pinpoint corner. Moments later, they were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Brennan Johnson was brought down by Andre in the box. However, Wolves keeper JosĆ© SĆ” guessed correctly, denying Son Heung-min from the spot. The missed penalty didnā€™t deter Totten hamā€™s attacking momentum. A slick exchange between Dejan Kulusevski and Johnson in a crowded box ended with Johnson firing a precise low shot into the net to give Spurs the lead. Wolves appoint ex-Porto...

Odobert inspires Spurs to last eight

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 1  AZ Alkmaar (Tottenham won 3-2 on aggregate) Wilson Odobert scored twice to rescue Tottenham Hotspurā€™s season as they overturned a first-leg deficit to beat AZ Alkmaar and secure a place in the Europa League quarter-finals. Author - Greg S Stadium - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium With Spurs languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and already out of both domestic cups, this competition represents their last opportunity for success this season. Ange Postecoglouā€™s side had been disappointing in the first leg, losing 1-0 in the Netherlands, but delivered a much-improved performance in front of their home fans. Odobert opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, drilling into the top corner after being picked out in space by Dominic Solanke. Spurs took the aggregate lead early in the second half when James Maddison exchanged passes with Son Heung-min inside the box before curling home a fine finish. However, a lapse in concentration saw AZ claw th...

Spurs suffer first Europa League defeat of the season

Image
Galatasaray 3 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Victor Osimhen struck twice as Galatasaray handed 10-man Tottenham their first Europa League defeat of the season in Istanbul. Author - Greg S Teenage forward Will Lankshear, who had earlier celebrated his maiden senior goal in just his second start for Spurs, was shown a second yellow card and dismissed on the hour mark. By then, Tottenham had already squandered several opportunities, leaving the final scoreline flattering them somewhat, given the hosts' dominant display. Despite the setback, Ange Postecoglouā€™s side remain well-positioned to progress from the group stage, sitting on nine points from four games, although Galatasaray have now overtaken them in the standings. A closer look at what happened Tottenhamā€™s shaky attempts to play out from the back, coupled with some chaotic defending, made for a difficult evening in a notoriously intimidating atmosphere. The tone was set by Yunus Akgun's sublime sixth-minute strike, a left-foote...

Tottenham thrash City

Image
Manchester City 0 - 4 Tottenham Hotspur A remarkable evening in Manchester. Who saw this result coming? James Maddison netted a brace as Tottenham swept past Manchester City, handing them a fifth consecutive defeat ā€“ a streak they hadnā€™t endured since 2006. Author - Macca Pedro Porro smashed in a third, and Brennan Johnson sealed the victory with a last-minute fourth on a remarkable night that saw Cityā€™s 52-match unbeaten run at the Etihad come to an end. That streak had stretched back to just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This was Cityā€™s heaviest home defeat since their 5-1 drubbing by Arsenal in 2003. It also marked the first time Pep Guardiolaā€™s side had suffered three consecutive Premier League defeats under his leadership, just 48 hours after he signed a new two-year contract extension. For Spurs, it was a stunning turnaround. Despite being without both first-choice centre-backs, fielding five teenagers on the bench, and coming off a 2-1 home loss to Ipswich two weeks ag...

Maddison marks return with winner for Spurs

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 0 Manchester United James Maddison made an immediate impact on his return from injury, scoring the decisive goal as Tottenham edged out fellow Premier League strugglers Manchester United. Author - Greg S Stadium - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium The midfielder, back after nearly four weeks sidelined with a calf problem, reacted quickest when United goalkeeper AndrĆ© Onana could only parry Lucas Bergvallā€™s shot, tapping home from close range after just 13 minutes. United had opportunities to respond, with Alejandro Garnacho wasting a clear-cut chance in the first half when he lifted his effort over the bar. But in keeping with their recent struggles, it was another uninspiring performance from Ruben Amorimā€™s side. For Spurs, this was a much-needed winā€”breaking a run of three straight defeats, including cup exits to Liverpool and Aston Villa. It also offers some respite for Ange Postecoglou, whose side climbs to 12th in the table, leapfrogging United in the process. Th...

UCL: Spurs suffer narrow first-leg defeat

Image
AC Milan 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs suffered a narrow first-leg defeat in the San Siro Diaz nodded in early on after Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster had saved a Theo Hernandez shot and then superbly got a hand on the scorer's initial follow-up attempt. Antonio Conte's side looked relatively comfortable for long periods of the contest against the seven-time European champions. A young midfield pairing of Pape Sarr and Oliver Skipp deputised confidently for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (suspended) and Rodrigo Bentancur (injured). Not much attacking threat from the away side They were rarely able to build any attacking momentum with their front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. They were all well-shackled by an AC Milan side that was well-disciplined. Will Milan have regrets? Mian's only regret will be not to have put the tie beyond this depleted Spurs side. Can they get at least a draw in North London to see them qualify for the last eight of the compe...

Pre Season: Bayern win on Kane return

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 3 Bayern Munich Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane received a warm welcome back at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, where fans gave him a standing ovation as Bayern edged out Spurs 3-2 in a pre-season friendly. Returning to his old stomping ground for the first time since leaving for Bayern in a Ā£86.4 million deal last summer, Kane came on as a late substitute. The England captain was met with applause both when he entered the pitch and later, when he took a solo lap of honour after the match. Alongside Eric Dier, who joined Bayern from Tottenham in January, the pair were honoured by Spurs before kick-off, receiving gifts in recognition of their contributions to the club. Premier League: Summer 2024 news and stories (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Before the game, Tottenham also introduced their new signings (Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall) to the home crowd. Premier League: Brighton fight back to stun Spurs

Image
Brighton & Hove Albion 3 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Brighton staged a stunning comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a thrilling victory over Tottenham in a gripping Premier League clash on the south coast. Spurs appeared to be cruising towards a sixth consecutive win in all competitions, having taken a well-earned 2-0 lead by the 37th minute. Brennan Johnson broke the deadlock with his sixth goal in six games, timing his run perfectly to latch onto Dominic Solankeā€™s through ball before calmly slotting it past Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen. Verbruggen was then left frustrated as he failed to prevent James Maddisonā€™s curled effort from nestling in the net, despite getting both hands to the low shot, doubling Spursā€™ advantage. However, Brighton came out after the interval looking like a different team. They quickly clawed one back early in the second half when Destiny Udogie struggled to clear Kaoru Mitoma's cross, allowing Yankuba Minteh to pounce and score his f...

PL News: Antonio Conte leaves Tottenham Hotspur by mutual agreement

Image
It has been confirmed that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual agreement.  Cristian Stellini will take the team as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach. This comes just over a week after Conte's extraordinary rant where he appeared to call out players and the Spurs board.  Let's explore some of the best reaction to this announcement Daniel Levy, Spurs Chairman, gave his thoughts on the club website : ā€œWe have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.ā€ Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, told us: "I totally agree with all that Conte said regarding the players and the lack of silverware since our last League Cup success. In my opinion, Daniel Levy needs to go, and go now. Maybe under new leadership Spu...

Bournemouth deservedly beat Tottenham

Image
Bournemouth  1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Bournemouth climbed above Tottenham in the Premier League table after defender Dean Huijsen's solitary goal secured victory at the Vitality Stadium. Author - Greg S Huijsen capitalised on poor marking to nod in Marcus Tavernier's inswinging corner at the back post after just 17 minutes. Huijsenā€™s goal highlighted Spurs' ongoing struggles with set-pieces, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou shaking his head in frustration on the touchline. Tottenham had started brightly, with Dominic Solanke making his mark on his return to Bournemouth following a Ā£65m summer move. However, the former Cherries striker, greeted with scattered boos from the home fans, saw two early efforts fail to make an impact. After Huijsenā€™s opener, Spurs struggled to regain control, while Bournemouth came close to doubling their lead through Tavernier and Evanilson before half-time. Postecoglou brought on captain Son Heung-min for Pape Matar Sarr after the break, spa...

Some of the best and most controversial Deadline Day transfers

Image
Transfer deadline day happens twice a season and is always a crazy day.  Let's explore some of the best and most controversial Deadline Day transfers. Dimitar Berbatov - Tottenham to Manchester United in 2008 Earlier on this dramatic deadline day, it had appeared that Manchester City were going to shatter United's hopes after they had a bid of more than 20 million pounds accepted by Tottenham. United ultimately got their man and the Bulgarian would go onto win two Premier League titles and a League Cup whilst at Old Trafford. At the time of the transfer, one Manchester United fan said: "Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov - Is there a better attacking outfit? Now we are really ready to attack European football like we have done domestically."  There is constant debate about the overall effectiveness of 'Berba' during his time at Old Trafford. Some United believed he was the world class addition needed at the time, others argued he slowed down a vibrant and ...

Premier League: United and Spurs play out pulsating draw

Image
Manchester United 2 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs came back from behind twice in a pulsating Premier League encounter to deny Manchester United what would have been a very important victory.  Rasmus Hojlund drove United into a third-minute lead. Richarlison then levelled with his sixth goal in as many Premier League games for the visitors. Tottenham were without three players, including captain Son Heung-min - who is away with South Korea at the Asian Cup. Marcus Rashford took the lead for the home team before halftime , but Rodrigo Bentancur nullified the advantage a minute into the second half with a powerful shot. This marked his first goal since April, overcoming a cruciate knee ligament injury and an ankle problem during that period. For new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe , who was seated alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors' box, the rest of the match served as a learning experience. Manchester United had less than 40% possession, managed only nine shots compared to Totten...

Own goal leaves Tottenham with work to do against Alkmaar

Image
AZ Alkmaar 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Lucas Bergvall's unfortunate own goal condemned Tottenham to a flat and uninspiring defeat in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie against AZ Alkmaar. Author - Greg S Stadium - AFAS Stadion Ange Postecoglou's side offered little in attack, failing to muster a shot on target until the closing stages, and only managing two touches inside AZ's box all evening. The decisive moment came from teenage midfielder Bergvall, who inadvertently diverted Troy Parrott's cross into his own net as he attempted to clear the danger. Spurs had goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to thank for keeping them in the tie, producing three crucial saves. This included one to deny former Tottenham striker Parrott, who joined AZ for Ā£6.7m last summer. However, Tottenham's hopes of progression took another blow with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur now suspended for next week's return leg after picking up his third booking of the competition. Postecogl...

Cole Palmer seals stunning Chelsea comeback

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 4 Chelsea Cole Palmerā€™s cool-headed 'Panenka' penalty capped off a stunning Chelsea comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure victory against Tottenham. Author - Lauren W Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez both found the net, while Palmer added two expertly taken penalties to sink Spurs, who had started brightly but crumbled under pressure. The result heaps further misery on Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who is facing increasing scrutiny. Tottenham surged ahead early, with Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski scoring within the first 11 minutes. However, despite Son Heung-min adding a late third in stoppage time, Spurs let the game slip from their grasp. Chelsea's triumph moves them within four points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who saw their game against Everton postponed due to Storm Darragh. Premier League: Spurs pick up first victory under new manager

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United's first away match in the new Premier League season led to their first defeat. Tottenham overcame a poor first-half performance to secure a 2-0 victory. Pape Sarr's goal and Lisandro Martinez's unintended own-goal resulted in Tottenham's victory.  There was an argument that Erik ten Hag's squad were better than their 1-0 win against Wolves at Old Trafford. Particularly in the opening 45 minutes, their attacking intent was evident as Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and the recent match-winner Raphael Varane all came close to scoring. Spurs rallied after half-time.This game marked their return to home turf after the departure of top scorer and captain Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.  In addition to their two goals, new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario played a substantial role in this Spurs win. Manchester United also had reason to wonder about a VAR review that ruled out a potentia...

Premier League: Burnley relegated

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 1 Burnley Burnley's defeat in North London means they are heading back to where they came from 12 months ago. Having taken a surprise lead in the first half through Jacob Bruun Larsenā€™s well-taken strike, a Tottenham fightback thanks to goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven ended Burnleyā€™s brave resistance and confirmed relegation.  A closer look at the match The first chance fell early for Spurs when Son played James Maddison through to the edge of the box. His shot was blocked by Charlie Taylor. Burnley were quick to head to the other end of the pitch. Wilson Odobertā€™s cross was met with a strong header by Vitinho but was brilliantly saved by Vicario and set the tone for some end-to-end action. Brennan Johnson was next up, forcing Aro Muric into another great stop at his near post. After a chaotic start to the match, things started to settle down a little with both teams sharing possession, until the 25th minute, Burnley burst into life aga...
