UCL: Spurs suffer narrow first-leg defeat

Image
AC Milan 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs suffered a narrow first-leg defeat in the San Siro Diaz nodded in early on after Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster had saved a Theo Hernandez shot and then superbly got a hand on the scorer's initial follow-up attempt. Antonio Conte's side looked relatively comfortable for long periods of the contest against the seven-time European champions. A young midfield pairing of Pape Sarr and Oliver Skipp deputised confidently for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (suspended) and Rodrigo Bentancur (injured). Not much attacking threat from the away side They were rarely able to build any attacking momentum with their front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. They were all well-shackled by an AC Milan side that was well-disciplined. Will Milan have regrets? Mian's only regret will be not to have put the tie beyond this depleted Spurs side. Can they get at least a draw in North London to see them qualify for the last eight of the compe

Premier League: Are Tottenham ready for the Champions League?

The first in a series of articles that will look at how teams did throughout the 21/22 season, and ask how they could improve for next season. In our first season summary, we have already spoken about Man City being crowned champions. Now it's time to focus on Spurs. Pre Season: Bayern win on Kane return

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 3 Bayern Munich Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane received a warm welcome back at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, where fans gave him a standing ovation as Bayern edged out Spurs 3-2 in a pre-season friendly. Returning to his old stomping ground for the first time since leaving for Bayern in a £86.4 million deal last summer, Kane came on as a late substitute. The England captain was met with applause both when he entered the pitch and later, when he took a solo lap of honour after the match. Alongside Eric Dier, who joined Bayern from Tottenham in January, the pair were honoured by Spurs before kick-off, receiving gifts in recognition of their contributions to the club. Premier League: Summer 2024 news and stories (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Before the game, Tottenham also introduced their new signings (Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall) to the home crowd. PL News: Antonio Conte leaves Tottenham Hotspur by mutual agreement

Image
It has been confirmed that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual agreement.  Cristian Stellini will take the team as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach. This comes just over a week after Conte's extraordinary rant where he appeared to call out players and the Spurs board.  Let's explore some of the best reaction to this announcement Daniel Levy, Spurs Chairman, gave his thoughts on the club website : “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.” Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, told us: "I totally agree with all that Conte said regarding the players and the lack of silverware since our last League Cup success. In my opinion, Daniel Levy needs to go, and go now. Maybe under new leadership Spu

Some of the best and most controversial Deadline Day transfers

Image
Transfer deadline day happens twice a season and is always a crazy day.  Let's explore some of the best and most controversial Deadline Day transfers. Dimitar Berbatov - Tottenham to Manchester United in 2008 Earlier on this dramatic deadline day, it had appeared that Manchester City were going to shatter United's hopes after they had a bid of more than 20 million pounds accepted by Tottenham. United ultimately got their man and the Bulgarian would go onto win two Premier League titles and a League Cup whilst at Old Trafford. At the time of the transfer, one Manchester United fan said: "Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov - Is there a better attacking outfit? Now we are really ready to attack European football like we have done domestically."  There is constant debate about the overall effectiveness of 'Berba' during his time at Old Trafford. Some United believed he was the world class addition needed at the time, others argued he slowed down a vibrant and

Premier League: United and Spurs play out pulsating draw

Image
Manchester United 2 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs came back from behind twice in a pulsating Premier League encounter to deny Manchester United what would have been a very important victory.  Rasmus Hojlund drove United into a third-minute lead. Richarlison then levelled with his sixth goal in as many Premier League games for the visitors. Tottenham were without three players, including captain Son Heung-min - who is away with South Korea at the Asian Cup. Marcus Rashford took the lead for the home team before halftime , but Rodrigo Bentancur nullified the advantage a minute into the second half with a powerful shot. This marked his first goal since April, overcoming a cruciate knee ligament injury and an ankle problem during that period. For new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe , who was seated alongside Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors' box, the rest of the match served as a learning experience. Manchester United had less than 40% possession, managed only nine shots compared to Totten

Premier League: Spurs pick up first victory under new manager

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United's first away match in the new Premier League season led to their first defeat. Tottenham overcame a poor first-half performance to secure a 2-0 victory. Pape Sarr's goal and Lisandro Martinez's unintended own-goal resulted in Tottenham's victory.  There was an argument that Erik ten Hag's squad were better than their 1-0 win against Wolves at Old Trafford. Particularly in the opening 45 minutes, their attacking intent was evident as Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and the recent match-winner Raphael Varane all came close to scoring. Spurs rallied after half-time.This game marked their return to home turf after the departure of top scorer and captain Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.  In addition to their two goals, new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario played a substantial role in this Spurs win. Manchester United also had reason to wonder about a VAR review that ruled out a potentia

Premier League: Burnley relegated

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 1 Burnley Burnley's defeat in North London means they are heading back to where they came from 12 months ago. Having taken a surprise lead in the first half through Jacob Bruun Larsen’s well-taken strike, a Tottenham fightback thanks to goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven ended Burnley’s brave resistance and confirmed relegation.  A closer look at the match The first chance fell early for Spurs when Son played James Maddison through to the edge of the box. His shot was blocked by Charlie Taylor. Burnley were quick to head to the other end of the pitch. Wilson Odobert’s cross was met with a strong header by Vitinho but was brilliantly saved by Vicario and set the tone for some end-to-end action. Brennan Johnson was next up, forcing Aro Muric into another great stop at his near post. After a chaotic start to the match, things started to settle down a little with both teams sharing possession, until the 25th minute, Burnley burst into life again. J

Premier League: Bournemouth boost survival chances

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 3 AFC Bournemouth Bournemouth took a huge step towards Premier League survival. Dango Ouattara scored a stoppage-time winner in a fantastic finish at Tottenham. Son Heung-min had earlier opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half before Uruguay left-back Matias Vina marked his first Premier League start with a deserved equaliser for Bournemouth. The Cherries looked set to clinch all three points after Dominic Solanke put them in front early in the second half, only for Arnaut Danjuma to come off the bench and equalise against his former club on 88 minutes. Fellow Spurs substitute Richarlison then sent a free header wide deep into stoppage time. The visitors went up the other end and Ouattara netted a dramatic winner. Premier League: Jamie Vardy returns

Image
Leicester City 1  - 1 Tottenham Hotspur The ever-reliable Jamie Vardy made a memorable return to the Premier League, scoring a goal that helped newly promoted Leicester City secure a draw against Tottenham at the King Power Stadium. At 37 years old, Vardy found the back of the net with Leicester’s first shot on target, heading in a cross from Abdul Fatawu from close range just before the hour mark. Vardy’s goal levelled the match after Pedro Porro had given Spurs the lead in a first half where they completely dominated and should have been out of sight before Vardy’s crucial intervention. Vardy manages to outshine Solanke  All attention had been on Tottenham's new £65 million striker, as Spurs aimed to prove they had the firepower to challenge for a top-four spot. However, it was a 37-year-old veteran who ended up stealing the show. Dominic Solanke is the player Spurs are counting on to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last year. Although he couldn’t ma

Pre Season: Spurs secure win at QPR

Image
QPR 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur Yves Bissouma's first goal in Spurs colours and a late strike from Dane Scarlett made it two wins out of two in pre-season. Ange Postecoglou's side secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon. This was a very entertaining match that both sides would have taken a lot from.  Midfielder Bissouma produced some dazzling footwork to slide home the opener just before half-time. Tottenham then weathered some heavy second-half pressure from the hosts, substitute Scarlett converted Mikey Moore's cross three minutes from time - just moments after his introduction - to make the game safe. Premier League: Summer 2024 news and stories  It was another largely positive afternoon for Spurs at Loftus Road, the only downside being the first-half departure of Lucas Bergvall, who had picked up a knock in the penalty area and was replaced by Dejan Kulusevski as they took no chances over the recent arrival. PL News: Ange Postecoglou close to becoming Spurs boss

Reports from across England and Scotland have suggested Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has agreed to become the new Tottenham manager on a two-year contract. The Australian has just finished his second season at Celtic. He has them to the Scottish title both years and the domestic treble this campaign. Could he continue going forward with the Parkhead side.  Spurs have been searching for a new main man since Antonio Conte's exit in March. Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason both took on the job on an interim basis but struggled to have any success. Cristian Stellini's was arguably a huge disaster.  Premier League news: Tottenham sack interim manager (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Very few Tottenham fans will ever really forget that horrible afternoon at Newcastle a few weeks ago.  More Premier League news:  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com)   Picture of Postecoglou during his first season at Celtic The final elements of the deal are being finalised bef

PL reaction: Kane winner opens up title race

Image
Manchester City 2 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur Let's have a look at all the reaction after Harry Kane's stoppage-time goal gave Tottenham a stunning victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City. The blues thought they had rescued a point moments earlier when Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review, but there was another twist to come and Kane, predictably, provided it. The Spurs striker, whom City had tried to sign in the summer, rose highest to nod home Dejan Kulusevski's cross in the 95th minute and spark wild celebrations from the travelling fans. ------------ The video below gives an interesting into the day from a Tottenham supporters perspective. ------------ It was a crazy end to a fascinating match that saw Spurs pegged back twice, with City running out of time to find a third equaliser. Tottenham's first goal came after only four minutes. Son Heun-min beating the offside trap and squaring the ball for Kulusevski to score on his first sta

UCL: Milan progress against disappointing Tottenham

This misery for Spurs was complete when Cristian Romero was sent off late on after receiving a second yellow card for a wild challenge on Theo Hernandez. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg tested AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan with a powerful second-half shot and Harry Kane headed wide, but Spurs failed to mount sustained pressure on the Italian defence. WSL: United and Spurs play out a classic

Image
Manchester United Women 2 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Women In a thrilling showdown that served as a preview for next month's FA Cup final, Maya le Tissier came to the rescue for Manchester United, denying Spurs their first-ever victory over the Reds. Le Tissier, fresh from signing a new contract, nodded in a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser amidst a crowded penalty area, capitalising after Rachel Williams rattled the crossbar. Spurs seemed destined for a historic win after quickfire goals from Bethany England and Jessica Naz overturned Melvine Malard's opener for United at Leigh Sports Village. At the end of the match, Le Tissier's timely intervention salvaged a point for United.  Click here for women's football news and stories Malard broke the deadlock by meeting Gemma Evans' lofted free-kick with a powerful header, but England's equaliser, although disputed, and Naz's clinical finish threatened to steal the show for Spurs. PL: Ronaldo breaks record and gives United important win

Image
Manchester United 3 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur A late Cristiano Ronaldo header sealed his hat-trick and gave Manchester United a crucial win in the race for Champions League football. Eight minutes remained when the 37-year-old bulldozed Matt Doherty aside, eyes fixed only on Alex Telles’s corner from the right, and connected his forehead to the ball as he cartwheeled through the air before hitting the turf. There was ecstasy and the ringing out of Viva Ronaldo from home fans. They could not quite believe their hero had done, again, what he loves to do.  Spurs have already beaten Manchester City away this season, so this was not an easy task for United. City 2 - 3 Spurs Ronaldo’s opener lit up the stadium. Raphaël Varane tapped to Fred who backheeled to the No 7. Cue delirium from the Old Trafford faithful and a lift for the United players. Ronaldo started to drop off the front to link with Diogo Dalot, and Paul Pogba forced a save from Lloris. United do this, though. They dominate and

Premier League: Son back to his best

Tottenham Hotspur 6 - 2 Leicester City Spurs recovered from a poor night in the Champions League by thrashing Leicester City in a memorable match in North London. UCL: Spurs lose in Lisbon (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Highlights from  Tottenham Hotspur - YouTube   Son Heung-min ended his goal drought with a scintillating 13-minute hat-trick as Tottenham ruthlessly punished Leicester's latest defensive horror show. The South Korea striker responded to Antonio Conte's decision to drop him to the bench after a barren start to the season by coming on to curl home two fantastic strikes and slot home a late third. Spurs had initially trailed to Youri Tielemans' early penalty but quickly took advantage of the Foxes' failings at set-pieces as Harry Kane and Eric Dier nodded home from corners to turn the game around. James Maddison's stunning first-time finish briefly drew Leicester level again, but Wilfried Ndidi's mistake allowed Rodrigo Bentancur to steer Tott

Pre Season: Spurs edge out team of top K League players

Image
Team K League 3 - 4 Tottenham Hotspur Son Heung-min scored twice, helping Tottenham narrowly defeat a team of top players from South Korea's top flight with a 4-3 victory. Dejan Kulusevski started the scoring at the 29-minute mark before South Korea and Spurs captain Son made a significant impact during his return to Seoul. Son bent a shot into the top corner after 38 minutes and then converted a Kulusevski assist to give Spurs a 3-0 lead by halftime. However, Team K League made a strong comeback in the second half, having replaced their entire lineup during the break. Stanislav Iljutcenko scored twice within five minutes of the restart. In response, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou made several substitutions. One of them, Will Lankshear, volleyed in a cross from Timo Werner to restore their two-goal advantage. Oberdan scored for the hosts with nine minutes remaining, but Spurs managed to hold on for the win. James Maddison almost added another, hitting the post in injury time.

Fa Cup: Spurs eventually cruise past Preston

Image
Preston 0 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs were up for the cup Two excellent strikes by Son Heung-min and a debut goal for Arnaut Danjuma were enough to beat Preston and send Tottenham through in the FA Cup. The away side were frustrated by their Championship opponents until the 50th minute when Son let fly from 30 yards. The South Korea international then turned and finished smartly to double the lead amid torrential rain. Danjuma, signed on loan from Villarreal this week, completed the scoring after coming on as a late substitute. Reaction Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, said: "A good win to improve confidence." This was a view supported by Amy. She added: "Nice and easy in the end." Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, told BBC One: “I needed those goals for my confidence. It was really important. It was the kind of position I like to shoot. In the first half I had a couple of chances to shoot but the keeper made a good save. “As a striker or as an attacking player, t
